Hi , i decided to mess around with an old 1/24 Monogram Cobra plastic kit that was falling to pieces. Thought i,d try and make it into the Cobra that Ken Miles raced at the 1964 Sebring, the one with all the vents.
Done quite a bit so far, i was wondering what the real car`s rear looked like, standard 289??? with boot handle / number plate light etc. I have looked in all my books but i can only find front and side shots. Looks good...checking my Cobra books for the view you seek.
I have an unopened, reissued Revell 427 S/C...trying to decide what to build with it. Hard to do brushed arruminum on plastic to do my own car (converted a Franklin Mint to mine anyway), so I was thinking of ol 198. Glue isn't as fun as it used to be. |

OK...see if this helps. Freidman's book Shelby Cobra at page 98 shows a shot of No. 1 with Morton at the wheel. It's from the side, but you can see the right hand side front scoop over the grill (ie., it's the 427 proto.). Looks like a square tailight out back.
Then I go to pages 102-103 and look at the Gurney/Johnson No. 11, which looks to have the identical front bumper/light treatment as No. 1 (not too surprizing given them both being team cars). Page 102 has a side-rear shot of No. 11, and you can clearly see the number plate light (no plate, of course), and less clearly the boot handle. I think one might fairly assume No 1 had the same fitment out back. |

Thanks Jamo, i just went back to that book and those small details will do for me :) . Notice the number 11 Cobra has a small triangulated piece of plastic/perspex tacked on top of the windscreen, never seen that before.

Well, like I said, I recreated mine using a Franklin Mint arruminum model and it worked out pretty well.
Then again, trying to make that ugly assed bumper Dick had up front (even uglier than the 427 proto's) with his two outlet per side exhaust is going to take some doing... |
JAMO, what was the story with Dick's two outlet exhaust? He was in town (EXeter) last fall and I noticed it but did not ask-just too much other stuff to talk about.

Some friend of his made them for him years ago when he first ran it on the street...

A Franklin Mint model stripped and polished to look aluminium/aluminium. Way to go. That's showing guts to do that to a collector model. :eek: Now don't start ripping those law library books about. Have you posted a picture of the model - the Franklin Mint one that is. Bernie |
Bought two of the Franklins at the Monterey Historics a few years ago, knowing I'd screw around with one. :p
