Exhaust Experience
Hello all! I have discussed this matter on a different forum, but since i see that there is a lot of exhaust discussion here as well, i thought i would post my db and dyno results here also. I have a ffr, which comes iwth 2.5" ID diameter pipes, so my experience and results will vary from other kits that have more restrictive or different exhaust systems. However, my results should help some of you to chose what will sound best and create the most positive results according to your goals. I am running a 306 with a mass-flo fuel injection system from www.massfloefi.com with afr 165cc heads, and 9:1 compression.

However, at other tested rpms they were the same as the ffr mufflers regardless of their 6 inch extra length. With that said, they did sound more mellow at cruising speed, but sounded the same going up hill and while at full throttle. The inserts were made and installed by www.sweet-thunder.com and they truly replicate that of the mid-year vettes while quieting down the db level. They were just as loud if not louder than the stock FFR pipes, but were much prettier. The baffles were faced in the opposite direction so they did produce a flappy sound while coasting or downshifting. The same flappy sound was evident with all of the mufflers that had the louvers facing the direction in which the catch air, yet the db levels were only minimally reduced if any. |

New dyno results are in for the Sweet-thunder pipes with the smaller diameter chambered mufflers when compared to the FFR 2.5 ID glassbacks. Baseline was 1hp less with the Cobrapacks.
We only lost 5 rwhp with the new exhuast-well worth the trade-off. The sound quality and volume is just so much better than any of the others that i have tested. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...hunderdyno.jpg |
Chris - like you mentioned the Sweet Thunder cores were smaller - around 2-1/4". I could also produce the 2-1/4" core w/3" outer body & modified ends to slip inside a 4" straight pipe - same as my Corvette inserts that are also chambered with the crimps - called "POWERSTICKS." None of the Cobra owners so far are showing any interest in running actual chambered pipes. This would produce a quieter tone (with the 2-1/4" core), plus a different tone than the "Glasscraps" someone else is referring to most Cobra mufflers as. Basically, you are all running "glasscraps." Anybody up for a 2-1/4" flowpath chambered insert?

I have an interest! I ran the chambered exhaust on an '02 LS1, with SLP long tubes, and loved the sound! I sure would like to here what my BB FE might sound like with the crimped chambered set up.

I run glasspack non chambered straight through 3" id with a 4" body with 22" body on a 406 small block and it sounds great,especially at 7500rpm.It is actually pretty quiet at low rpm(I still listen to the stereo).

I'm installing sidepipes with nothing inside. Do you think it will be loud enough?
