Heat Shields for Side Pipes

After seeing some of the burns that folks have gotten from their side pipes, I wonder if the heat sinks I see on some cars help. Probably not much, but anything has to be better than nothing. Where do they come from and how do they attach?

jwd 06-04-2007 11:25 AM

Finishline (they advertise here) sells them in plain, chrome or ceramic coated. I believe they help considerably.

I'd be interested to know if they actually help. Has anyone ever tried to compare temp readings on a car with and without the shields?

I know my daughter still got a bad burn with the covers on. The problem with mine is the clamp that holds the shield to the pipe is right where you step out of the car. I suppose the vented ones work better.

I don't believe the covers will prevent burns and they will make the side pipe come out further and metal conducts heat quite well. Most motorcycles have covers, which you touch those pipes?

Furthermore, the area in which your leg would hit is NOT covered by the covers. (most only cover the muffler, which is too far forward)

I had vented heat shields on my BDR. Even after going down the interstate you could put your hand on the shields and they were only warm to the touch hence NO burns. The only way you could burn yourself would to be to touch the headers at the fender exit before the heat shields. You had protection as you entered or exited the Cobra. Contrary to some on this forum I liked them and they did there intended job.

That sounds great! Can you post pictures?

I sold the car about a year ago but you can check my gallery for pictures. The shields came with the car but I think BDR got them from Finish Line.

I got vented shields from Finishline after my son and daughter got bitten.

They work - They get hot, but not hot enough to fry skin and the cool down very quickly.

Dan, these look GREAT. I guess they fit ANY Cobra, not just FFR?

Do you actually have a set? How do they fit over the pipe, just 'drape'?

i have vented heat shields on my car and they are only warm to the touch ,even after a run . mine are stainless steel like the side pipe itself. they look great and work a treat .mine were made by a friend who works with stainless steel. those pipes are hot things look awful and they dont even go the full length of the pipe.you wont be disappointed with vented shields i guarentee.

Hi Dan,
check out the fold out exhaust pipe covers at copper star products. They fold out over the pipe when you get out & completely cover the pipe. There is a photo log on the website showing how they work. I have had the "Bite Blocker" on my car for the past 2+ years & my 4 year old daughter who is now 6 has never burnt her legs & she slides out over the pipes on her own. Go to thier website www.copperstarproducts.com to see how they work. There is no comparison to any metal shield. Take Care, Bisbee Kid

I've got 'em - and yes they work.
