The Turd - CSX 2196

I have done a search on this but couldn't find an explaination.

It has been called The Turd for sometime now.

Why & how did CSX2196 come up with this nickname ?
Who gets the credit for coming up with it ?

As I remember, the 427 proto was so named because of handling issues.

Turd

The 289 needed more power so Ken Miles placed an Iron Block Iron Head 427 in the leaf spring car. Bad combo...Stuffed it into a tree. Miles stated they needed light if they were going to go big block so, Shel got Ford to cast Alloy Blocks out of the 427 casting and ended up basically with a 390CI sideoiler with aluminum heads and 58 IDA Webers. The original motor is still in existance but not in the car.
The Fliptop was then constructed the Turd and they ended up with a car that was about 1800lbs as I remeber the rhetoric..

.

Was the block a side-oiler ? or was it a center oiler ?

Side-oiler cast off the iron block 427. Since it was aluminum it was quick and easier to take the side-oiler and sleeve it down to 390 bore size.
Alloy need Sleeves

There are a lot of explanations but Miles created the appellation, "turd" because of its blinding speed. It was a reference to the fact that the car would pretty much sh**t on anything that tried to compete against it.

I seem to recall a Shelby interview where he made a comment somewhere along the lines of "the car looked so ugly after they beat a big block into it, we called it the turd". Cal, if that were true, wouldn't they have called it "the rectum" and everything they passed would be a turd? Talk about digression, I'm going to go mow my lawn.
