Contempary Classic Motor Car Company
 

I have come across a Cobra for sale in. It has just been imported from Japan. The seller claims it was built in 1965. Under the hood is a 7 litre engine with Shelby heads. A plaque under the hood says "Contempary Classic Motor Car Company" NY. Chassis No 2341. It's in a very sorry state and I have no intention of buying it but I am intrigued to know if anyone knows it's origins?

Contemporary Cobras were built in Mamronek, NY, and ceased operations sometime in the late 90's I believe. They were well built and very accurate, having bodies molded from an actual CSX car and proper round tube frames. PM me with the info for the car if you don't mind - I'd like to find out more about it. Thanks!

Doug...I was at Nosingers in Mamaroneck a few weeks ago to get my speedo repaired, I believe the owner was connected to Contemporary..they were interested in what replica I owned....

Contemporary did not make the cars in 1965 "Shelby" did in those days. CCX cars are a very nice replication of the original cobra with dates of manufacture ~1980 - 1997.

I think the car from Japan was a tribute to CSX3020 with windsheild versus comp glass? Please share the add for sale as many would have interest especially the owners group.

Nisonger - Peter Bayer also was the owner of CCX motorcars in the beginning later sold to Burtis.

I smell something fishy here. This persons first post traces back to Tanzania in Africa, now this post gets traced back to United Arab Emirates. Gentleman, we may have a troll among us.

Contemporary did do quality work. But, to say that they were very accurate is totally wrong. Yes the mold may have been pulled off of an original but it was then modified (the sides had more height to them). As far as the chassis, all that it shared with an original was that it had round tube. The design of the chassis as well as the suspension were nothing like an original. etc. etc. etc.

I'm interested in hearing more about this, as I've never heard about this before. How was the body modified, and why? Where did you hear of this? Is it documented anywhere?

My understanding is that the wheel openings on the Contemporary were lowered a bit to help later tires "fill up" the opening.

Ok guys before this gets out of hand:
1) Accurate to original look, asymmetry, and feel is what Contemporary Classic are all about. They did that well!:) Your comparison above is not fair since newer 4000 cars are also not SC in design. The CCX pictured above is also a later mold by Burtis, that was even different than original CCX design by Bayer I am told.
2) True, they did splash the CCX cars from an original "SC" not street car which we all know took a different form later in the evolution of the cars. The SC did have a slightly different shape. I have only pictures of CSX3045 after resoration for comparison so the world may never know? I do beleive that the sides look taller on CCX from the pipes hanging lower. My pipes hang lower off the body than an SC. A personnal friend has an SC and the pipes set higher on the rocker panels. I have heard that CCX did tighten the front wheel well a bit because they liked the look. Artistic liberty I guess.....:p Heck, even ERA has taken some liberties with symmetry and shape.
3) Look at a Hi-Tech, Contemporary, ERA, CSXcont, or KMS at a show. They are truely top notch cars which set themselves apart from the rest in shape and form. (There are many other great cars of high quality and unique variation I am just using these examples)

This can be debated for days, weeks, or even years. Bottom line is looking under a Hi-Tech, CCX, CSXcont, KMS, and even some Midstates you will see a 4" round ladder style frame. Is Contemporay the best and most accurate? NO!
I would rank the top cars in the order of CSX via KMS with the more original suspension, KMS forged suspension, Hi-Tech and CSXcont glass tied for third with ERA and CCX a strong fourth. We all have our opinions on this front....

Bottom line CCX held to the original overall dimensions while replicating the look, feel, and essence of the original car.

Bottom line.......
Buy what YOU like and drive it, unless it is a car made in the 60's with VIN of CSX2XXX or CSX3XXX it is nothing but a replication of the original car.

Now lets move on! I'm going out to burn some high octane.......
