Drag Radials:

I am trying to find a D.O.T. drag radial as close in size to a 295x50x15 but I'm coming up empty. Anyone have a suggestion?

Power Surge 07-18-2007 11:35 PM

Hoosier, Nitto, Mickey Thompson and BFG all make a 275/50-15 DOT Drag Radial. No 295s in that size.

LETSRCE 07-18-2007 11:45 PM

Hey Sal. 275's are to narrow, I want something to fill the wheel well. I can find non radials in that size. Maybe I'll change the fronts also, I don't know.

Rebel1 07-18-2007 11:49 PM

Avon have a road legal drag tyre in the size you want. Great tyre too..

CR6ZZ see here: http://www.avonracing.com/road_legal_page.asp

Cheers

Didn't even notice it was you Joe! Long time no talk.

What size CAN you fit? I saw some 315s and 325s as well, but I don't think any were 15s.

What's your intended use for the tire? If you don't plan to throw the car into turns and just want some straighline traction, I'd go with some Quick Times, or a similar bias ply tire.

I don't believe the Avon CR6ZZ is considered a drag radial. However, it is a high-performance radial tire (probably about the best 15" high-performance radial tire on the market for Cobras).

I have the Avon CR6ZZs on my car. They are fantastic road race and street tires. I love them. However, they are not particularly good drag tires. I was only able to knock a tenth of my et using the Avons as opposed to Yokohamas. I just got a set of MT 325/50/15 drag radils. If I can squeeze them into my SPFs wheel wells I am going to see if I can lower my et some more without destroying my half shafts.;)

RedBarchetta 07-19-2007 08:32 AM

See my gallery on how to shoehorn MT 325's under an SPF. Also running DRs on the front, too, and the grip is pretty awesome once you get them warm by "scrubbing" them while you drive slowly (think F1 cars on their warm-up lap). The MT is a more economic alternative to the Avons, which are arguably superior (based on results I have read here).

Yeah, I'm just waiting for my half-shafts to explode.

As I recal, I have BFG Drag radials that are 315 50-15. They fit & look great. Pretty wide too. But I am just going from memory, I could be wrong.

Joe,

I've got a set of the MT 325s sitting in my garage waiting on 2293 to come home. If you want to see them up close you are more than welcome to take a look. I'm at the north end of Gilroy. I unfortunatetly also have the 26" SR tires from MT for the front, they are tiny compared to the 325/50s. Will have to change something out.

Thanks Daryl, I would like to take a look at them.
Give me a call when you have time.

Thanks

Well it looks like it's going to be the 325x50x15.
BFG discontinued the 315's.
I just switched the stock SPF sidepipes for the Buckshot ones and the car now spins the tires in 3rd gear:eek:

Daryl, thanks for letting me take a look at them.

Calbullet 07-22-2007 11:01 PM

Joe, which mufflers did you order? street, street/performance, or street/race? and how much difference in sound are they compared to stock SPF.. I want to order a set, just can't make up my mind on which ones

thanks
Mel

I went for the loudest ones he offers. It is LOUD!
Almost twice as loud as the SPF pipes.
The car runs better also.

I have SPF 2040. I use the 325/50 15 Mickey Thompson ET street drag radials on the rear. For these tires I picked up an extra set of rear wheels with of 4 inch backspace to move them in a bit. The passenger side was perfect, but the driver side had an interior wheel well location with a protruding lump of fiberglass. It's the rough black area that would have the other side behind the driver seat with carpet on it. I fixed the lump and all has been good for a couple years.

I have the Buckshot Racefab side pipes too with 3" core. They actually required going up 3 jet sizes primary and secondary over how it was set up with the Superformance side pipes. The drag radials make the car fun to drive. The BFG tires that came on the car are a death wish.

Well said and my exact sentiments. Some guys like that feeling of losing traction during high rpm shifts.
I guess I could never be a AA funny car driver...

Well, I got the 325-15 M/T drag radials on the SPF. Jeeez, they are a tight fit! I am going to have to spin the springs a few times on the Bilstein coilovers to give me a little more clearance! :p I mounted these on a spare set of rims and plan to use them just for the strip. I did put about a hundred miles on them on the street to get a feel for them. They definitely hook better than the Avons on launch, so I have high hopes that my drag times will improve by a couple or three tenths. I will say that in all other facets of driving and car control, the Avons feel a LOT better than the M/Ts. The Avons also throw a lot less gravel. For all of you guys running the drag radials on all for corners for street use, if you start putting a few extra pennies in your piggy bank and save up for the Avons the next time you need tires, I predict you will catching a lot of bugs in you sh!t eating grins! No matter what - be safe and have fun!!
