Water Temp Gauge
 
My water temp gauge only showed at 60c when driving a car for at least 1 hour in normal hot day, to me this look like the gauge does not work properly

Does any one know how to remove the gauge and recalibrate, or I have to purchase a new one

This gauge is not easily repaired.
I suggest you purchase a new gauge.
Two small knurled nuts on the back side mout it to the dash.
The guage has a thin brass tube wrapped in SS wire that extends to the intake manifild. Use the same routing if you like. No dash removal is required. Small hands are a good thing too.
It's an easily replaced item. Even the manifold connection just unscrews with little or no coolant loss.
When routing the brass tube, be sure it's clear of any potential electrical arc's like sparkplug wires or the distributor cap. Do not kink the tubing.
The only hard part of the job is the dent in your pocket book.

Hi,
I would try a new sending unit if it's an electric gauge, about 15 bucks , should be screwed into intake manifold.

The gauge is mechanical, will the new sending unit work and where to buy?

a new OEM 427 Cobra Mechanical Water Temperature Gauge $142.80 plus shipping........... Ouch

Digital Infrared Pyrometers
 
I bought a Digital Infrared Pyrometers from a local parts store for $40-$50.

I use mine to check the temperature at the sensor to prove the gauge is correct. I also check different point of the engine, hoses and radiator. You can check header temp. I use mine to set the adjustable fan switch. It's a handy tool.

No, you cannot replace the sending unit or any other part of a Smith's mechanical temperature gauge (I'm assuming that your SPF has the standard Smith's gauges). It's an integral assembly, from sensing bulb to dial, and you have to replace the whole thing. However, Nisonger (www.nisonger.com) will repair your gauge for about $120. Add shipping both ways and you're getting back up to $140 again. Check their web site and give Peter a call. He's very knowledgable and very helpful.
FWIW, my water temp gauge just failed also. I've gotten a new one, and am going to have the failed one repaired so I'll have a spare. These Smith's gauges work for either oil or water temp. Only difference is the label on the dial.
