Safety on cheap imported engine hoists !!!
 

This Saturday I had everything ready to go to finally put the 428 and TKO in the Cobra. I have used this engine hoist many times to remove the body from the frame and move the engine block around.

My son and I were pushing the hoist towards and under the car when we heard a loud bang. The hoist took a nose dive. Praise the Lord, no one was hurt and the engine did not hit the frame. It just sat there and swayed for a minute. Stephen brought the floor jack over and we stabilized the engine hoist by putting the jack under the leg of the hoist so we could figure out what to do now.

We decided to go ahead and sit the engine and trans on the frame while we
found a replacement wheel.

After measuring the wheels, we found out that they had put smaller 4" wheels out on the ends of the long legs. What had happened is that the small wheels at the end were not able to carry the full load of the engine and trans. I found a set of 5" swivel wheels on my engine stand that matched the other 4 wheels on the hoist. After the quick pit stop, we did succeed on getting the engine safely into the frame.

The hoist was made in China. There is no name or part number on it.
It's been so long I can't remember if I bought it locally or on the internet.

Please check all of your import tools and use them with great caution.

change out the front wheels before you use
it again.

To me, they all rook arike.

However, mine had larger fixed metal wheels, not casters.

I agree about the engine hoists. There are tons of them out there for short $$$$. Usual place of purchase is something like Harbor Freight and Salvage.

Ask the question - do you want to trust a $10K engine and a $5K paint job on a $100 engine hoist? Not me!

I actually got mine at Costco. Worked fine. Then sold it 7 years later for about what I paid for it.

The hoists from China are only rated to lift 4 cyl. engines!

Poisoned our pets, our toothpaste and our kids with lead-based paint...now they almost wrecked your car.

Unfortunately, some products are only made in China, like the freakin' computer I'm using. If a non-Chinese alternative is available, I'll go out of my way and pay 3X as much to buy it unless it's something I'm planning to throw away.

Unless it's the slimp flied lice...

First hand knowledge: Chinese electronics manufacturers commonly scavange chips and parts off of failing boards and reuse them in production electronics. (Like that computer you're using, Lowell W...)

Why is this bad? Soldering parts onto boards stresses the parts. They're designed for this. What they are not designed for is to be pulled off (again with high amounts of high heat) and then soldered again. This repetitive heat cycling reduces the lifetime of the chip, and may induce intermittent failures (which are a SOB to trouble shoot!). I wouldn't buy Chinese electronic devices of any sort.

...And they call ME Dangerous...
