Need info on a NJ Title

I bought a half complete contemporary classic cobra and I would like to get the ball rolling on titling the car. All that I have for the car is a receipt from the man I purchased it from. After a year of not so actively pursuing one I feel my only option is to complete the car 100% , document the build, and pray that the state will issue me some kind of bill of sale. I would like to know if there are any other avenues to pursue that would enable me to register the car before completion so that I may be ablle to road test the car during construction.

Not likely in NJ as the requirement for the car to be inspected prior to registering.

Did the previous owner ever have it titled? If not, do they still have the MSO from Contemporary?

Check with what it takes to get a new title for a reconstructed car from DMV.

Mso

Getting the MSO is essential to your success. contact the manufacturer if they are still in business.

The manufacture is out of buisness. Any suggestions!

Contemporary has to have someone somewhere with records. even out of Business they are required by Law to retain these records for at least 10 years in the USA. hopefully you can locate them using this forum. start a new thread seeking information on them! Good Luck!!

No...No they don't....Peter Bayer offered those records to Burt Burtis when he sold Contemporary to him and Burtis saw no use for them, so did not take the records...yes, he was that stupid.

Maybe you can track down Bayer at Nisonger and ask him if he did anything with them....Just a thought.

The MSO essentially serves as a bill of sale or title for the car until a formal title is issued by the state. If the person you bought the car was the original purchaser who bought the car from Contemporary, but has lost the MSO issued by Contemporary, I would ask the seller to go to a notary and execute an affidavit stating that he was the original purchaser, was issued an MSO from Contemporary and that the original MSO is lost or destroyed. I think an affidavit to that effect from the seller combined with the receipt for the purchase would be sufficient for DMV in lieu of the original MSO. But I would put in a call to the Special Titles Division in Trenton and they could tell you for sure.

the last two posts about sum it all up for you!! do not let any time waste in this pursuit as it will only add to your already growing list of things to do with this car. and I would say this issue takes top billing!:JEKYLHYDE

You need a Manufacturers Certificate of Origin for the original kit. This will show that a reputable company produced the chassis and it is not just something you cobbled together in a free moment. For NJ, every receipt and scrap of paper with any information on it needs to be kept together to show where every part came from when you take the car for it's safety inspection, before the state will issue a VIN for the car. Only 2 inspection stations (1 North; 1 South) do these inspections, before the car can be registered, and the neater you make it for them, the easier the process will be.
