Wrong , the car in the add is the REAL Shelby, the rebodied car is the fake , with the switched VIN plate, etc. IT IS AGAINST F E D E R A L LAW TO SWITCH VIN PLATES FROM CAR TO CAR

I still don't see the big deal, it's just a parts car anyway. |

The big deal is somewhere out there is a plain jane 68 Mustang convertiable with a VIN and title of another car attached to it.......Whether the VIN/title was from a Shelby or another plane jane mustang really makes NO difference in the eyes of the law........Switching VIN numbers and titles from one car to another is against the law in all 50 states.........There are a number of folks in Angola (Louisiana state penetentry) that have done the exact same thing, I happen to know a couple of them.......One did time in a federal prison, cause he was taking the cars to Nevada and selling them there, crossing state lines doing this makes it a federal offence...... he got 5 years......... Who ever ends up with the "e-bay" car has an original Shelby, the VIN is marked in more than one place on cars.....Buying,selling or even possesing a car with a VIN that has been removed or even altered is also against the law.......I can put you in touch with a few folks that can attest to that fact also.........they too are in jail....... Case in point; at the 35th MCA bash at Barber Motorsports Park,Unique Performance had a display of the continuation GT-350s , I was looking over one and noticed the original T- code VIN (6-cylinder Mustang), was told they could affix the Shelby VIN/numbers to these cars, but the car had to retain it's original VIN to be legally sold and registered and they were following the law to the letter.......... I can see the issue with a limited production car like this one. I do feel the seller is being as up front as he can be about selling it. There's no law against selling a car with no title. But that's only half the battle as the buyer could be up to no good with their intentions, which WOULD be breaking the law. |
Yes, the seller could/can sell that car with no title, but if he removes the original VIN from the car itself or alters it in any way on the car itself, he is then breaking the law!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have seen a few old mustangs in junkyards with a nice 3x5 peice of inner fender apron missing on them, guess where that metal ended up????? Go down to your local junk yard and ask the owner what paperwork he has regarding each car on the lot????? If they do not have the title, they would have a form from the state (as in abandoned cars) giving them the right to own each and every car on the property...... David |
Not to be arguementative, but the vin swapping can be done legally if it is supervised by law enforcement after proper application and the old car is destroyed and the new car would have a salvage title.
I think this is more a case of an insensitive owner doing an unsympathetic restoration on a basket case rust bucket that nobody would be interesting in riding in let alone owning if it were not for the profit potential associated with the Shelby moniker. That said, I kind of like it. I bet it gets right on up there price wise near 50,000 USD, or it gets pulled before auction close. Any other guesses ? |
Some years ago I went to look at a GT-500 Mustang for sale, (I forget the year, 68 or 69). Turns out it was a 'real' GT-350 but redone into a GT-500, complete with tags and vin and all the right pieces. It just didn't smell right. After a couple of visits and some serious questions I finally got the story from the guy. NICE car, well done, I walked away not being sure WHAT category the car would fit into now. A waste of a good GT-350 I thought...

regardless of the poor state it's in, that car can be rebuilt, floor pans, rocker panels, quarter panels can be replaced, and Shelby specific items can be found and return the car to it's former glory and it would be an original Shelby GT 500..... Johan, I'm with you, I think the car will indeed go for big bucks and someone with the time and expertise most likely will rebuild the car....I've seen a few Shelby's in just as bad or worse condition rebuilt and done the right way and you'd never know how bad the car was before the rebuild........they are all worth saving to me, I'd hate to see this car turned into a "parts car"........ I would guess at least 40k for the car.........considering what decent drivers are going for now-a-days.......... David |
The smart buyer would buy the E-bay car, and then get law enforcement involved to retrieve the "real" title for him, whala an inexpensive "real" Shelby. Has any one made SAAC aware of this auction, them guys like to keep track of stuff like this.

Around these parts, the Louisiana State Police doesn't take too kindly to VIN fraud type stuff, they have a division assigned strictly for this type of stuff........they regularly make suprise visits to salvage yards and ask to see paper work on cars as well as checking odometers/VINs on car lots, you'd be surprised at what they turn up..... Marksville? is that anywhere by Lafayette? I have an apartment in Church Point, a house in West Monroe and I travel to Houma & Fourchon all the time. I spend half my time here and half in AZ...its a long commute

I bought my first 65 Mustang Fastback from a guy in West Monroe around 1990 and a bunch of parts since then from an old guy that has a little Mustang junkyard there...... Maybe we'll run across each other one day down here, who knows, it's a small world........and as my "new best friend" I'll let you buy the first beer...:D :D ;) ;) Yes, I would think commuting to Az. would be a "ride".......
