Oil Thermostat selection
I know I need to run an oil thermostat in my FE/Oil Cooler setup. But not having any previous experience with the brands, are there pros/cons between these two:
Earls 502ERL sandwich type $100 or Perma-Cool remote type $45 plus $15 in AN adapters Other than price difference, is one preferred over the other? Thanks Paul |
They both work the same, no functional differance. I prefer the Sandwich type.
The remote thermostat works a little better with a remote oil filter. |

I dislike the sandwich plate due to packaging concerns and the permacool's can be iffy due to quality concerns with the casting (search for info). I use a Mocal unit that comes made with -10 connections (no adapters, saves $$) and has an extremely good reputation for quality. I have used mine for years without issue. Flow is very good as I had very little pressure drop after install. Good luck with your choice.

Yes. Getting the oil up to correct temp is vital for longevity. I must run one here in 'sunny, hot' Texas to stabilize oil temps. Just make sure you get one with a built in bypass to keep the oil cooler free of air pockets and sludge.

Earle's makes a couple of nice billit alum thermostats. I'm using their sandwich type. Much better construction that older cast alum ones. They also make one that looks like a solid block of alum. Similar design as the Mocal one above, but looks differant.

I bought the Earl's sandwich type but it's just a little too big to fit on my ERA. There's not enough room for the hose connections to clear the frame. If you're interested in buying it, I'll let it go for $75 including shipping. I did try to install it so it has a few minor cosmetic scratches but nothing major. I just went through this drill and really took the long way around the barn. I bought the Earls 502 planning to mount it on the block. NG, too many things in the way so I wound up buying a Canton billet remote filter mount and a Canton billet filter relocater. Works great but here's a tip. If you elect to go with the sandwich thermostat you must use a large remote mount like the Canton billet piece that covers both O-rings on the sandwich or it will leak. Don't ask me how I know.
