Engine / transmission location question
Bear with me here - I've not done this Ford thing yet!
Lets say I have a 351C with a Tremec TKO600 in my Contemporary. If down the road I replace the Cleveland with an FE, will the transmission mount for the Tremec still be in the right place? I guess what I'm asking is does the switch from the Cleveland to the FE change where the transmission sits in the car? |
Anyone ?????

When you are mocking up the engine, leave the transmission in place.
|
Actually, there isn't anything to mock up. The small block is in the car, all the chassis mounts are standard mounts for a small block. I'm almost certain that a small block and FE use the same mounting positions on the frame. Has anyone here pulled a small block from their car, and put in an FE? If you did and used the same transmission, did the rear transmission mount line up OK? I'm pretty sure it all does, just wanted to double check for certain with someone who's done it. Anyone???

Are 351C and 351W (small block) mounts the same? I know they are different blocks. You might be into changing the frame mounts anyway.
|
The chassis mounts are the same. Differences in the actual engine mounted motor mounts make up for the differences in the blocks to put the engine in the same location in the car.
|
Don't know about a Contemp, but in a Shell Valley, the transmission mount lines back up. The engine mounts will need to be moved though.
|
I pulled out a side oiler and installed a small block in my Contemporary(wanted to do serious open tracking) The FE and Windsor frame mounts are NOT located the same.

I'm with Blykins and Racer X ... The trans mount should stay the same (as long as you are using the same trans) but the motor mounts will probably have to come forward a couple of inches. Also, unless you are having custom headers made, that could be another issue...

I'm sure you guys are right. What confuses me is that you walk into a SPF dealer, pick your car, pick your engine, and off you go. Does this mean that they weld the engine mounts into the car after you buy it based on the engine you chose? I always assumed the car came with the mounts, and any Ford engine commonly used in these cars (in the case of SPF most are Windsors, a few are FE's, a few are 460's) dropped right in. How does this work with SPF's?

SPF has one position chassis engine mount...the difference is the engine mount/insulator for a specific engine. Tony |
