What's rattling in my sidepipe???
On my way down to Watkins Glen for an afternoon of watching the vintage races. Somewhere along the trip I noticed a lot of noise from the driver's sidepipe. The noise was most noticable at stop lights or slow driving (less wind noise obviously). It didn't seam to do it until the pipes were hot. Is there baffling that can break loose. I did have a pretty loud backfire earlier in the day (found a nice flat open country road & I couldn't resist pouring on the gas). I put the car on a lift this evening & didn't find any loose pieces, so I'm still assuming it's in the pipe.
BTW the Glen was great. Maybe a little too hot, 90+, but some really beautiful cars. Saw one real cobra, a few GT40's, lots of British & German cars too. |
If you have a glasspack type muffler, the glass always blows out and leaves only the steel mesh core that can rattle. Or you may have an auger type muffler that gets loose and rattles,(like mine). Neither will come out.

The glasspacks are normally spot welded in and can come loose. A friend had the same problem. Try drilling a 1/8" hole into the underside of the pipe (out of view) and putting a screw into the pipe. That should snug the inner metal canister up to the sidewall and stop the rattle. Or, you could spend a lot of money to cut the pipe open, weld, coat the pipe...

Spot weld the end of the muffler on the inside of the pipe. It has happened to me serveral times over the years.
