New Style Electric Fuel Pump Installed - Quiet

I have had three Holley Red, rotor and vane style, fuel pumps in my Cobra for 12K miles. None of the three ever stopped working completely but would fluctuate fuel pressure and the pump would sound very different at times so I always carried a spare because I did not want to be stranded. Plus the Holley Red pump is quite noisy. I could hear the whine even when the sidepipes were making their sweet noise. I have very limited room to mount a fuel pump so I needed to stay with a pump that was very similar in size and shape as the Holley Red!
I decided to change pymp styles so I purchased a new Holley Gerator style pump which is very close to the Red pump in shape and size. I installed it over the weekend, which turned out to be very painless because of the size similarity.
After the pump installation I turned the pump on before firing the engine and I could hear it but it is very, very, quiet. With a little wind noise outside I had to place my ear on the rollbar to make sure it was running! When I fired the engine there is now no pump noise at all. I just hope that the new pump maintains constant fuel pressure for a lot of miles!!

Good to hear. I have a very loud Holley Black and have been contemplating trying one of the Gerator style pumps for a while now.

Terry...interesting. I think I will get one of these. I found these two at Summit...

Which one did you use, the 125 or the 150?

Glyn, I purchased the HP-125 because the factory set pressure was 7 psi whereas the HP-150 if I recall correctly had a pressure of 14 psi!!

Question- why run a electric pump vs mechanical if you're not running at sustained high rpm's ? Mechanicals are almost bullet proof and no noise. Unless it's a race car that is.

I have the HP-150 and was very suprised and happy as to how quiet it is. I have a return type system and my pressure at the carb is a rock steady 6 PSI.

Why electric? Personal preference, I can turn it off and hide the turn on switch for security reasonns, and it just looks so cool.....

Just lock the doors. ;)

Danc...can I assume you used a pressure regulator to get it down to 7 psi?

Glyn,
Yes, I have the following:

Tank, 50 micron mesh filter, HP-150 pump, Large summit 10 micron cellulose filter, Mallory bypass regulator, QFT-950 carb with a gauge between the regulator and carb. Just make sure you use a NON-liquid filled gauge. A liquid filled one will read lower pressure than you actually have once the heat from the engine gets to it.

Here is a link to the regulator at Summit.

Sorry to break this thread over to mechanical pumps but also a believer in what I consider a more a belt and braces uproach.
I have recently renewed my Carter Mechanical following fuel starvation on the old Cart Mech. Does anyone have experience of the Summit Racing Mahcanicals giving any more advantage, outputs look similar. Or alternatively any other suggestions over what I have on. New pumpcured the starvation problem by tehe way.

Engine is a Ford 351 C-4V

Thanks
Charlieh

You could look at one of these if you feel like dumping a few bucks in a serious mechanical pump. You need a regulator and probably a return line.
