fuel gauge bouncing & needs calibrating
Have Stewart Warner Stage III gauges (vertical read). Anyhow while driving the fuel gauge bounces up and down. Does anyone have a suggestion how to get it to settle? Also is there a way to calibrate it? After getting the needle to full, we can add several gallons more so we can't trust it when it says half full or otherwise. Any help would be appreciated.

It may be calibrated already. When it says full and you are still adding gas all you are doing is burying the needle.
It may be calibrated to give you an accurate reading on the low/empty end of the gauge. The bumpiness may be due to a really/sensitive active sending unit float, when you jostle the fuel in the tank that float is "riding the waves" if you will. If it really driving you nuts you might want to consider a different sending unit |
The arm on the float on the tank can be bent to change the resistance in the sending unit.

Production cars use a voltage stabilzer to dampen the wild swings.

This will fix the jumping problem, it's a fuel gauge control module from fox bodied mustangs and other Fords?. As you can see there are 5 tabs, sending
unit, gauge, positve, negative and the last I do not know?. I'll post when I it's figured out...unless one of you guys know?. |
Oh yeah!, it's located om the back of the instrument panel....

Thanks all for the advice... Man really don't want to have to pull that tank again just to bend the sending float arm. Question is do you bend it upwards or downwards?
Well guess we can put that on our to do list and maybe some day we will get to that one... Mike |
get gas every 100 miles. foolproof. Check my thread from June 04.
Once I got my gauge working, it reads 1/4 tank 'over' full. I figured it must be off 1/4... so if it reads 1/4 left, i'm outta gas! thought you might appreciate these pearls of wisdom. ;) gas every 100 miles.. gas every 100 miles.... Kristen |
There is a little Voltage stabilizer available for British cars.Jags have them as do other Lucas equiped cars.I have had one and it works just great.Should be an easy find and only has Power in and out.
