Original Maroon color
I'm narrowing down my color choice and one of them is a dark maroon color. I saw what I believed to be an original color Maroon 427 street car at the infamous "Glass Car Company" in NJ. I worked next door when in college and this was one of the cars on his floor for about a year (along with the Daytona coupe).
I thought it was "Royal Maroon" used by Ford in 1968 and '69 but after seeing that in person, the Cobra was darker and richer. Anyone have any idea how to identify this color? |
Rangoon Red is the typical color you may be referring to (though I might be having a senior moment...that may be Chevy color?!?)

Rangoon Red IS the original Ford red, but the maroon is a Lincoln color from 1965. I know someone had pposted a list of the OEM 427 colors here a while ago.

That is excellent info, thanks for posting it. As I remembered it, it was darker but it was 30 years ago. What is the last color shown- Is it the vineyard green? Bob |

The color you are inquiring about was on CSX 2318 that a friend owned in the early 70's. The color is Reuge Iris. The photo below is from a Polaroid that has been scanned. The Before picture was taken the morning he arrived at the sellers home in San Jose. The fellow pulled the tarp off of it and it was a "done deal"

Yeah, the vinyard green is quite dark and doesn't show well in the photo.
The numbers on the chips are DuPont I think . I'll have to check on that. If you show that number to a paint supply guy, he will know what brand it is. I love the Rouge Iris. I have seen several of those on 289's, and it is absolutely my favorite color for a 289. I can't find any reference to an original 427 car being rouge iris or marroon, even though the color is shown on the paint chips. Jim |
