I have the four poster - similiar to Madmaxx. My ceiling height allows the GT40 easily and the standard family car below. Still lots of room.

I have seen the dry board removed and re boxed up similiar to a skylight opening. You generally pick up 8 - 10" here due to roof rafters/beams.

Another option I have seen when in Texas, was the use of a very large skylight that was placed above the screen and the roll bar.

This added the extra inches through the beam and a little extra, due to the raised skylight perspex section above roof iron - the skylight perspex dome.

The lifts there looks good. Yes, would make it easy to work on the car.

Prior to placing the lift in here, I used a neighbours garage who has a pit.

I thought about a pit. It would be as easy as cutting the concrete and digging a pit. Concrete brickwork would be easy to install.

My neighbours pit is very old and it is formed with old hardwood timber and steel bracing - all looks re cycled timber.

What bobcowen said. The kwik lift is movable, inexpensive and can be dismantled quickly to get it out of the way.

I've used it to take my tranny out a few times. Worked great.

For a single stall garage, I just don't see the post lift working well ?
The Kwik Lift is a easier package to move in needed.

Maddmaxx- With the 4 post, the cobra looks real close to the ceiling, can the garage door open & close ok ?

Are the door rails with the wheels an issue when you lift the car up ?

Is that the reason for "the torsion spring garage door and needed a new opener I would go with the liftmaster 3800.

That lift would be great though ! ;)

I called American and she thinks that with my 9' ceiling, the lift should be fine.

Problem is, the sale is OVER ! Bummer.

Yes the car is close to the ceiling but there is enough room. Garage door is completely out of the way, the attacjed pictures shows my original tension springs. the door would not stay down when closed and would not stay up when open. They actually make special drums for the torsion bar for a "high lift garage door application" Now it works perfect and little to no effort, my opener shows up next week and will mount on the side of the torsion bar.

On a side note in order to give cobra more room when the lexus is on top I decided to remove on of the blocks on each leg and relocate. After 1 hour with a 4.5" grinder, cut-off tool, dremel tool, 8lb sledge hammer, wedges I finally got 1 block off, three left. If you have a spatter of weld it is strong enough to support a Hummer. Holy sheet did I work to get it off. I was very carefull not to mar the lift or the angle the blocks were attached too. I got some 1" key stock to replace.

I work on cars and boats all the time, my lift has never gotten in the way, if necessary I put it all the way down and drive the car on the runways and park it that way. In fact it helps because I will raise the cobra and pile all my project stuff I am working on under it, like ladders, saws etc or whatever other tools I do not want to put away until the project is complete.

How the heck can the quick lift cost so much, it does not have a cylinder, hydraulic pump and motor, 1/2 the steel. No brainer to me, but every lift has a user. If the quick lift was $500 that may make sense. I will say this I like the "Deleware" refereced better than the american because the rods used to mount the carriage wheels is removable. Other than that they look the same.

I would have to invest in a new hoist, overhead crane, something like that. Not hard to do, I suppose. An overhead trolly hoist would be pretty cool. But I can remove the Kwik Lift for free. My crane is easy to dismantle and put in the basement until the next time.

madmaxx- That sounded like a lot of work but, well worth it at the end. Keep grinding.

Bob- That's how I remove my engine at our sprint car shop. I won't take my cobra down the gravel roads. I have to unload the sprint and equipment out of the trailer then come back to load the cobra in,....well, ya know,too much work.

I bought my Kwick Lifts way back when they first started business and got a big break on the price if I would Let people come look at them. I got the jack bar that goes across the lifts from rain to rain and also a bottle jack. The first thing that I noticed was their being easy to slip on if there was any moisture so I bought non slip strips at the local hardware store. I have been very happy with them and have certainly gotten my moneys worth out of them. To change everything in my garage to use a lift would cost as much as the darn house. I used to pull my tranny and I could have it out and on the floor in about 20 minutes. But mine are dirty and splashed with several colors of paint where I used them to lay thinks on to paint.

Look at this. Just announced at SEMA a few months ago. Apparently this outfit is associated with (owned) by Bend Pak. It works in garages with 8' ceilings and there's still room to get at the tranny.

Technically I don't think it's hit the market yet. You can submit your email address to be notified. I found comments supposedly by a Sr VP with Bend Pak talking about this product on another website. I think it's going to be $1800.

The scissor type for me, would not be worth it. It will always be in the way and really doesn't lift high enough. I have a 9' ceiling so, if the two post only needs 8', it's a no brainier for me. I'm too,oooo excited already. :3DSMILE:

Wendell- I'll have to think this over fast, for the sale or this 2 post by Bend Pak. For the money if under 2k, how could you go wrong ? We'll see.

It my hobby so I do not consider it work, heck what else do I have to do LOL!!. The key was to get a corded die grinder instead of my $8.00 harbor freight pneumatic. It cut right through them had the other three off in about an hour. Worked out great. I am still bewildered by the strenght of welded material. Best of luck on what you decide, if you have a single garage it needs to be pretty wide. I know one thing my next house will have 3 car garage period!!!!! Today was probably all for nothing, I already have the itch to rip out the sheet rock so I can park my boat on top and the cobra on bottom, only need about 18" but will save $105/month in storage.

I agree it's a hobby for me too. I just don't like the crappy jobs like, rusted bolts you can get off, seeing new stone chips or a new oil drip. :mad: lol

I would love a nice shop at home, and someday, I will build one in our large backyard. I'll have to bury the pond I built, which my wife will have a @hit fit. lol :eek:

A friend and I race sprint cars and he has a great shop/house, two miles from me but, he's out in the country, and it's either all gravel, dusty or muddy roads, not a good combination for my Cobra !
I got real tired of emptying the sprint trailer, loading, unloading ect. ect.....
to take the cobra over to work on it.

Scratch that "itch", and get busy !!! ;)

The front-to-rear dimension on wheel centers for our Cobras are considerably shorter (~10") versus a Corvette or Porsche. I learned this when I modified my Poorman's Qwik Lift to accommodate my C5 Z06. After viewing the video, I wonder if the wing span of those yellow lifting arms, fully retracted, would clear the tires on a Cobra? I really like the concept of portability but this is something to consider...
