Are side pipes legal in NSW?

I asked this in another thread but it seems to have gotten lost in traffic.

What's the good oil on operational side pipes vis-a-vis registration, police, etc.

Ta, Graeme

EDIT: Arrrgh!!! I was attempting to post this in the Oz Fourm.

I've seen the ocasional Cobra on the road piped that way. I assumed they weren't dummy pipes. Next time I'll take a closer look.

Wonder how they got away with that.

PS: Would a Modertor/Admin please move this thread to the Australian Forum, ta.

they get them redgistered with a legal (read decibels) under body system then fit the side pipes once redgistered and drive very slowly past the policeman:LOL:
ps: thought i better add that i am not saying that any of the ones that do have working sidepipes are ilegal, its amazing how things may fall off, be hit by speedhumps mis interpretation of the law you get the picture!

What he Said!
Register it legally then change.Make them removable for Pink Slips each year unless you know someone who will tick it through ;) and idle past the law when you are out enjoying.

So far so good for me!

Cheers

You mean have an under-body set of pipes in place and a set of headers to go with them, then have another set of headers for the side pipes to be removed temporarily, meanwhile the disconnected the side pipes sit on it during inspection?

Sounds like far too much work!!!!

Hi Graeme,

I keep existing headers and unbolt at flange and 2 bolts to the chassis then they're off. Underbody system comes out of shed then attachs to flanges and the goes 2 into 1 then hooks on chassis in 2 places, over the diff and out the back. 20 minute change over once a year as long as you don't burn your hand getting the pissy quiet underbody system off! Hope your not with the RTA...!
Cheers

Not with RTA!

Well, if you put it that way, then I can see it. But don't you get asked about the holes where the side pipes normally emerge?

Cheers, Graeme

Ah, the old toe cooler trick.

Beejay 11-22-2007 09:19 PM

No one really cares on the street, you would be very unlucky to get busted with live pipes.

I have sidepipes and an underbody exhaust on mine that is half finished. You are welcome to come and take a look.

Cheers,

Ben
