Price for crate 427 stroker & tko600---
I have a car for sale and a few people want a different engine, etc.. what would be a good price on a 427SBF stroker with 500+ horsepower-new blowproof bell housing and appropriate clutch and of course a new tranny--TKO600 I would think.... would be going in a Backdraft.. I would handle the install.. here is link to sell..

You should have no trouble selling your car with the existing drivetrain at that price!!! Do you have it on Cobra Country? That is the perfect combination for someone first cobra or someone not hp hungry. Let the ones that tell you that is not enough hp, to can spec out a new one and they will have to make up their mind if they want to spend another 6K for 351. You move into a reputable 427 and you will easily be over 55K on a new one. I would never change out the drivetrain, there is no way you will recoup your time, risk and money. The right buyer will come along and snatch it up. It is January.
To answer your original question and I know you said no roush but a roush is $14.5K pluss $2.2K for trans and clutch so 16.7K at the high end and I would guess $10K at the low. I would not buy unless it was a KC, PE, Roush, so even if you could build for less you have no reputation as an engine builder even though you might be the best why would I take a chance without a proven track record. |
TRS - IMHO, Maxx is right on the money with the advice. Let the new owner deal with a new powertrain upgrade if they want. If something goes wrong, you will be tied to that car longer than you want too. You should have no trouble selling the car as is, but you have to consider the market might be a little more closed for half the country given the season.

We've never made out well doing the motor swap and resell... and we are at wholesale. However if you can find someone to give you $55k for a non-Roush engine in that one, more power to you.
January is the toughest month on the planet to sell these cars universally. It's not as much a climate issue as a tax/budget issue. I realize you have another pony on the way but you really need to hold out until mid-February and it will sell no problem at that price. Factor in our price jump soon and you have a better deal. |
It appears the Cobra supply side is increasing. BDR is in full spring now over 600 chassis, SPF 4000 chassis?, plus everyone else. I feel in the next 2-3 years the "used" cobra market will be fairly ripe, hopefully by then the economy will also be turning around!!. If you buy new now (not used) you had better dish out the extra for the Roush engine or something special in the engine bay in an attempt to differentiate your car from the other used ones on the market when you sell. lf you own a cobra you want the manufacturers to increase their prices, you recoup 50% of their price increase when you sell yours used.

I was thinking around $11000
I would never consider building engine myself.. reputable builder only.. Reason I said $55k is to steer people back into reallity.. everyone thinks they can get a stroker 427 for same price, of course if they are willing to pay I will do it...I have seen some go close used with Roush 402.. I could use the existing drivetrain in a 65-67 Mustang project I have been thinking about.. Your right the market is getting ripe.. although I was told by Frank the other day that if anyone wants a roller it will be April-May 2008 before any are available..had a friend who showed some interest since he has an engine. Cashburn would know more about that.. By the way I love wheeling & dealing on just about anything and once in awhile get lucky and make a few bucks..then there are the other times:D |
We are sold out until May. The looming price increase has created incredible demand. I just sold out our Holiday Special today with 2 more orders. I will be ordering 7 cars on Monday to put this in perspective.
Maxx knows the market well, his advice on the engine and benefit of price increases is dead on. You need to put in your ad in BIG BOLD LETTERS that it is titled as a 1965. That is major. |

I would increase the price to $39,900 and list on cobra country. One just sold on CC for $38,500 with 12K miles and a 302!!!! As you can see everyone is sold out due to the recent price increase, so you have a unique opportunity. Tell the lowballers to look elsewhere!!!!

MadMax I agree.. was going to put it on Cobracountry a month ago--should have done it.. I have fpund Ebay is good to get attention to something tou are selling but not that great of place to actually sell.. I have bought cars and boats that were on Ebay but didn't go through ebay.. i sold the Mazda Miata to someone whose mother saw it on Ebay.. maybe they should just advertize "Ebay a place for you to get attention" for a small price.. You do get 1000's of lookers though..:D

Curt with CC is one of the nicest guys on the planet. He will walk you pick your photographs for you, Send him all your photos I think he is into photography more than cobras but either way the cars sell with alot less hassle than ebay and his websight is always working.
When I sold mine he told me to ask $3K more so I asked $2K more and sold in for all practical purposes in the first day. Had a backup offer and sold at asking price. |
I had talked to Curt months ago and he is a nice guy, took plenty of time to explain a few things to me.. we even talked some guns.. which he is really into..
Ebay is a hassle some times and even if you get a buyer---it ain't done till you have the cash in your hand.. lord forbid Ebay blacklists someone, all they have to do is sign up again under another name.... a good place for dealers to get national attention and receive calls about their cars.. thats why they all put their web site and phone # in auctions.. I have a few that are serious interested, but who knows if they even have the money..%/ it won't be back on Ebay again.. |
eBay as you have already observed is for advertising. Direct sales are rare and the high bidders are often out of their league in money but if they are under reserve there is not consequence.
That's why the Fixed Price model is being adopted so heavily. We've used it. But you still get an offer of $24,000 on a Fixed Price car for $49,000. |

Like everyone has already said, I would highly recommend selling the car as is and let the buyer transplant if that's what he wants to do. At a minimum, if say he's not too mechanical and you are, he buys the car as is. Finds a buyer for engine and tranny and you tell him you will do the swap when he's ready. Case in point, I recently bought a car that the guy wanted $4800 for. It had a new 383 in it that I didn't want but he had a 355 that he could put in it. I asked how much he'd sell the car with both engines and he said $5800. I was planning on selling the 383 to a buddy but then he broke it down and said he'd sell teh car withteh 355 for 3,000. ok... great! I'll take it! A week later, he had the 383 for sale for $2000 and my friend boguth it! He got $5000 instead of $6,000 because he swapped the motors. Had he held out, he could have sold the car with 383 for 4800 and hte 355 for $1000 easily! He was just impatient to get rid of a toy. And BTW, My wife would probably enjoy a Barbie pink cobra! lol She wants a metallic pink daytona. Maybe someday! haha |
