Need paint repair advice
I'm seeking advice on repairing urethane paint (4 color coats & 4 clear coats). My Shell Valley body developed ripples in the top of one front fender months after painting. When I received the body, the fenders were very thin and flexible and I was concerned about the paint cracking if someone leaned on them. I successfully applied fiberglass to the undersides to improve rigidity. The painted body looked great until the ripples appeared. Now, I'd like to re-finish the fender but don't want to completely disassemble the car and re-paint the entire body. Without door seams, etc. to work against, I'm concerned about being able to match the paint/clearcoat. I still have the original paint/clearcoat so color matching shouldn't be a problem. I'm concerned about overlap of the new paint on the old clearcoat and new clearcoat over the old. Has anyone successfully done this kind of repair and if so and would you mind sharing your techniques? Thanks in advance.

I'm not a paint expert but what I know says you need a door seam or stripe to use to terminate old and new paint. You may have the original paint but the color on the car ages with time and fades with sunlight. Even the clear coat would discolor slightly. I'm sure others with more knowledge will chime in.

I have watched the paint and body men here work on Cobras and when they have to do a front or back section, they do the whole thing. I saw one where they tried to just do the front fender and finally had to do the whole front of the car back to the doors to get it to look right. Inside it looked ok but once they got it outside in the sunlight you could see the slight difference is color, and this was on a pretty new paint job so it hadn't had very long to start fading. Ron |
