Is a Spal fan the way to go?
I have to mount a pull type fan behind my radiator, and I keep seeing guys use Spal fans - I guess this is the way to go? What model are you guys using? Where are you getting them? Thanks.

767Jockey,
Here's one site that sells Spal fans. The-Fan-Man spal fan manufacturers, electric automotive cooling fans. John Annie |
Spal's one of the best quality fans out there and one of the few manufacturers that don't greatly exagerate their CFM Rating. I've used them on several vehicles along with other mfr's fans. Spal was the only one w/OEM quality (if that's a plus).

They are used as OEM on a lot of new cars. It is a very good product. Just a heads up when purchasing. Curved blades are quieter but do not move as much air as the straight blades.

Spal certainly is a good product. However, I've been using a Zirgo 16" for several years and it has been able to handle my 496 RAT motor through several Southern Arizona summers. I switched the fan directly to my ignition so it runs whenever the key is on. Seems to me, I bought it from eBay for about $100. About 1 /3rd the price of a Spal, I'm thinking. Just an option.

Have used a 16" Spal puller in the Kirkham for seven years now. No problems at all.

With my Spal fan I just let the fan pull me down the rode and it has really been a gas saver.

Spal 16” - straight blade. Excellent fan and would not consider using anything but. Not an area to compromise.

Thanks for all the info, guys. Took into account all that you have said, then called the Fan Man as recommended. Ended up ordering a Spal #2082, he says it's the highest CFM fan Spal makes for street use. There's one more that moves more air, but it's not recommended for street use because the motor on it isn't made for use over about 2 hours at a time. Thanks for all he input.

Make sure you get the rubber 'mount' for the fan to keep it away from the radiator surface. Sold separately I think!

If it's on for more than 2 hours at a time you got more to wory about than a fan.

Unfortunately, on a summer day here on Long Island, that's all too likely to happen every once in a while. We get summer traffic here that occasionally makes Cali look tame. We can usually avoid it by avoiding places like the Hamptons, but sometimes, when you least expect it, you're in stop and go for hours.**)**)

Long Island traffic could definately be a problem, but as long as your moving it's not a problem, do you plan to use a temp sensor so it goes on only as needed and an over ride switch ?? Tony |
I upgraded from dual 10" to dual 12" SPAL fans on the GT40 but the best part of the upgrade was the digital controller I hooked up. SPAL's website has it. It basically is a programmable controller that turns on 1 fan on at a given temp, then 2 fans at 1/2 speed, then full bore, when needed. It's the best. I am actually thinkling of adding this controller to the Cobra's twin pullers.:MECOOL:
