cleaning aluminum
Greetings. I need some advice as to what to use on two different aluminum parts on my Contemporary Cobra.
1. The engine compartment has aluminum panels sparating the engine from the running gear. They are a little grimmy and I would likee to get them clean with out ruining the surface shine. 2. I have the cast aluminum "Cobra 427" valve covers and they as well as the manifold and the water pump are gross!!! Dirt, grime, rust, fuel staining..... These covers were in a wash cabinet with 180 degree water first then I have tried: stuff for cleaning aluminum semi trailers, Simple Green, Ajax, oven cleaner (worked pretty good)..... I am heading towards getting them bead blasted but not with the cut glass, using balls instead. Can anyone suggest something that will clean these items? Thanks. David |
David,
The best aluminum cleaner and polish I've used is Blue-Job (blue-job.com). You can find it at most Harley shops. Chris |
Sounds like bead blasting for the cast pieces is the way to go. I did that on a Sunburst cast alum. rim then used WD40 to protect the finish. On the aluminum panels after they're cleaned try Magic Aluminum Polish

I use windex, and scotch brite as I am going for the old look. WD40 is also a good route as it cuts grease and protects. Add somne pics to your gallery..... Remember to use the Contemporary Forum within this site..... Jeff |
I used Windex and Scotchbrite initially to clean the surfaces on my aluminum CSX's and sealed the surfaces with Zoop Seal. The trick with Zoop Seal is using a little rather than a lot and avoiding overlapping applications.
Afterwards, grease, road dirt, tar etc easily wipe off with either Windex or Dawn dish soap. |

I have tried to post pictures to no avail. can some one help me??

Try this stuff.. On my Halibrands.. when the cast alunimum gets a little dingy, I spray this stuff on and it makes the cast aluminum look brand new. Now, it will make polished surfaces look dull and you have to shine them up..
Mag Cleaner |
Aluminum panels- dawn dish soap
Cast aluminum - Simple green or engine degreaser. Do no use mag cleaner! |
I used regular car wax on mine.

For any polished surfaces I have used Simi-chrome polish works great. You can usually get it at a motorcycle store.

nothing worked
I have bought a blast cabinet and will use glass beads as they clean better than the other media like walnut hulls. NONE of the mentioned products worked. I have a really dirty set of valve covers, manifold, etc. as the car has been idle for 15 years. thank you all for you suggestions. i will take some before and after pictures.
