Anyone running Firestone Firehawk INDY 500's?

I'm looking into tires for my ERA 289FIA:

235/60-15
295/50-15

My selections are limited as I'm on 15" wheels.

Goodyear Eagle GT II's fit, but I've heard that they are very low-performing, and they come in last on a lineup on TireRack.com.

BG Goodrich Radial T/A's fair better on the TireRack.com line up, but I've also heard negative reports on these tires

Firestone Firehawk INDY 500's got the best rating out of the tires I compared on TireRack.com. I haven't heard anything negative (yet).

This is my first set of tires while I adjust and tune the suspension, so I don't want to put on the more expensive AVON's or Goodyear Billboards---maybe later.

Tires will be used for "cruising and spirited driving" and I will purchase track tires later. This is for road use.

Anyone used Firestone Firehawk INDY 500's and want to provide an opinion?

I've looked at them as I'm ready to get my first set of tires for my car. Right now I have these in my shopping cart at Summit. I've heard good things and the price seems about right.

Nice looking tires. I've heard good things about M/T's myself. I'll look into it.

Any others?

Try Dunlops GT's

Dangerous Doug Have you looked into Gt qualifers from Dunlop? I have them on all my cars. For the cobra I started with the BFG's. They are OK on the DRY street and normal driving, That about it. They are good for doing burn outs. In rain they are poor. I have the GT's on my 79TA and drove the car 4 years in every condition, snow, ice, heavyrain, and never had a traction problem with them or defect. The white letters to bleed over time. I have them mounted on the insides. I am running 15" on the jersey streets and 17" pilots on the racetracks and road courses. I do change the front shocks and spring for the ride differents. Rick L.

Those Firestones are just like the Goodyears and BFG's, they are very dangerous if you have more than 250hp and if you like to get on it once in a while.

427 S/O 02-06-2008 08:46 AM

Yeah!, I got em' and man do they stick. I've given them hell and very satisfied, for less than a $100 each!!

Dangerous Doug 02-06-2008 09:11 AM

427 S/O: You've got the Firestones Firehawk INDY 500's?

Tim Brewer: On what is your comment based upon?

Jim Norris 02-06-2008 09:19 AM

I've run the Firestones from the beginning (255/60/15 and 295/50/15). They were very sticky when new. They now have over 10,000 miles on them and they still work ok. I like them.
I'm producing 561 hp at the flywheel, and I put my foot in it all the time, without worry. Of course, I have no frame of reference since they were the first ones ever on the car, but I'm happy with them.

427 S/O 02-06-2008 09:48 AM

Yes, I couldn't wait to get rid of those ^#&@$ radial T/A, hard as a rock. With your small block they should handle even better.

427 S/O 02-06-2008 09:53 AM

Tim, your information is wrong, I know for a fact Those GY radial T/A's are dangerous. I know nothing about the BFG's....

Dangerous Doug 02-06-2008 11:00 AM

I'm leaning toward the Firestone's.

Anyone else want to chime in?

By the way, I just ordered my wheels from Vintage Wheels. They'll ship Friday even with the custom machine work I had requested (backspacing, et cetera) to fit them to my 289FIA. I got the 427 Halibrand type wheels, as I like their look better than the standard FIA wheels. I was impressed by Vintage Wheels. Very together, very prompt, very fair, unlike other wheel manufacturers I'd talked to over the last quarter.

Those Firestones were my first choice too... but the sizes are VERY VERY difficult to locate ... I managed to purchase Yoko's Avids S/T and they work well but now that brand / size is no longer being manufactured so our choices are very limited and shrinking...
good luck!

Leaning further toward Firestones...

bbrown 02-06-2008 02:01 PM

Doug,

Very happy with my Firestones on my Kirkham. They handle the twisties just fine, they are smooth, the car tracks straight, and the braking performance is great! I have had these 3 years and couldn't be happier. BTW, I do not track my car.

One more thing, get them at Big O, since you are in Calif. The Firestone dealer guy wanted 120 bucks each and 3 week delivery. Big O wanted about 80 bucks each.

Good luck

427 S/O 02-06-2008 02:39 PM

Yeah!, I bought an extra set for about $88 each...just in case.

Dangerous Doug 02-06-2008 03:07 PM

Thanks. I was just getting ready to look for where to buy. I know there is a Firestone shop in Santa Cruz. I'll look for a Big-O Tires near here.

Firehaws

Good for me, I like them, they are not stone throwers!

I've had GY and BFG's in the past on other vehicle and neither have hooked as good or road as good as the Indy's.
Last I looked TireRack didn't list them anymore. Hope there still availible..
