I'm not an FE guy, so this could be wrong...

cobraed - What you've just described should work fine; it's just not technically a "closed" crankcase ventilation system.

This setup is what is found on the 283 smallblock in my 1967 (insert name of Ford's chief rival) Malibu. Fresh air flows into the crankcase through the vented oil filler cap at the front of the intake. It passes through the crankcase and up to the PCV valve at the back of the intake, then into the carburetor baseplate. It's a "positive" ventilation system, but it is not "closed" because under high throttle, etc., crankcase gasses can still escape to atmosphere through the oil filler cap vent.

The system only becomes "closed" if the vented oil cap is sealed and replaced with a tube going into the air cleaner. Then, under heavy throttle, the blowby gasses that would have escaped go into the air cleaner where they are pulled in to burn.

Now, as I said, this is info coming from "The Dark Side," and the setup in an FE may be different. If so, do tell! I'm still learning on these Fords!
