rear end question
So I take apart my rear end ..Dana Jag
There is a piece of one tooth on the ring gear missing. No metal at all in the oil ..everything seems to look and turn fine .. Question is : would a guy that had this car before me put this in like that (how big of a problem is it) I know...I know..of course its not a good thing but..... can this be run with a 1/2 missing tooth of a ring gear without even knowing it? Also if I buy a new ring and pinion..how much am I looking atto rebuild this frickin thing ...I have a guy to do the labour |
Find another rearend
Scufty I ring and pinion for that rearend is in the $4-600.00 range. If the tooth is not in the case, The guy before you knew he damaged the gears. The only thing I can tell you is go to swap meets ot junk yards and look for another jag rearend. You only need the center section. What gear ratio is it? May sure that you get about the right year for the center case. The mounts changed for the caliper and parking brakes. You should be able to fine a whole unit for about $3-500.00 dollars. Jag gears are different from dana 44 gears even though they use the same basic case. I did install a locker from a dana 44 in jag case but had to enlarge the bolt holes from the ring to fit the new posi. Rick L.

From my carrier swapping, YES
Scufty I swapped a dana 44 locker into my Jag center section. The back spacing is different on some of the ratios. From info I got, there are 2 Jag cases, 1 takes gears to 4.09 and other higher. There are 4 carriers with different back spacings for the gears. I had to drill out the holes in my carrier to fit the 3.31 ringgear on my locker. They where Jag gears. The rest I had no problem. There is a guy sell 2 rearends on here, what's he asking? It might be cheaper that trying to fix the rearend. I would keep that one for a spare. I would trust it for any hard driving since you don't know how or why the gear tooth was broken. If you couldn't find the tooth in the case, the guy before you knew there was a problem. In time that broken tooth will wear and tear up the gears and bearings. I did install a 30 spline locker and remove the 27 spline one. You may not have a problem, I am not 100% sure only 72%. You will need a case spreader for doing the carrier work or risk too much carrier load on the bearings.

Part of the problem is that I will most likely need to rbuild the one buddy has for sale anyway and I live in Canada...so Shipping may be grief. I will keep you updated as to what goes on ..Im not quite sure what to do now? My carrier is a 3:54:1 ratio I do believe
