All this talk about trailers and stuff, and not to hijack Sal's thread but anyone have a good recommendation for an electronic brake controller? Since I sold my Super Duty, I only have my Wife's expedition for a tow vehicle. It doesn't have a good brake controller and I'll be pulling a 20' open trailer from Oklahoma city to Erie PA so I want to add a brake controller. I was thinking maybe the prodigy proportional? Any suggestions?

I have the Prodigy in our 2500 HD and it works well.

Go look at the 24' that CobraDan posted. We have two 24' foot enclosed Featherlites in our family. They seem big at first, but throw in a toolbox, a few spare tires etc. and they don't seem so big. Like a garage, it will seem too small after a while.

They always seem to come in handy. This summer I moved from one house in town to another and used one of the trailers. I never had to hire a moving company.

There is a similar thread over on ffcobra right now, almost unanimous recomendation is the Tekonsha Prodigy. The only reason I am not running one is my 06 F250 has the integrated brake controller. I keep a Prodigy in the glove box just in case the integrated one ever flips out.

Also have the integrated on a new F250. Had Prodigy worked well, make sure you mount it as level as possible, helps with the "sticky brake" syndrome.

My wifes expy I'm almost positive should have come with one but I think the previous owner removed it? I'm not sure why. I know it came with the towing package and has the round 7 pin, and there are a couple holes drilled in the lower part of the dash where one could have been. I dunno. I guess the prodigy it is!

Wish I could have my 250 back! I sold it to a friend who I just found out sold it a few weeks ago for what he owed on it because he couldn't afford to use it as a daily driver and make the big payment. He sold it almost 7k under book value! i would have bought it back from him at that price!

fsstnotch,

That's funny, we traded in an '02 Exped. with the prodigy mounted on the dash!

Any thoughts on this? I don't want him to wind up with something too small, that will be a pain to load. The 18" seems like it won't be too bad. Also, any thoughts on the price?

Thanks!

O.K. I feel like a kid talking on a C.B. for the first time back in the 70's. This is my very first post on any kind of blog, chat room or whatever we call them. I just joined today so here goes...

Regarding trailers, my suggestion is to go as long and wide as you can afford.
The axel weight is really important & try to find a "beaver tail" to prevent high center problems. Also check to see if it's already as low as possible or perhaps you can lower it so your not hauling around 2X6's to put under the tires of the car to prevent it from dragging on the ground every time you load or unload because the ramp door is to steep. The down side of a low trailer is dragging the rear of trailer on entry and exit of parking lots, but you can learn to avoid that with a turn of steering wheel just at the right moment. Also having a winch w/ battery power comes in handy to load and unload so you are not hitting the car door on the inside of the trailer and squeezing out of the car each time. It is very easy to damage your car loading & unloading.
Remember, as soon as all your friends know you have a trailer they will all want to use it! Good Luck.

See, my friends all kinda know that they aren't going to "borrow" my trailers. I'm usually more than willing to help them move or haul whatever they need for gas money, but I very very very rarely will let someone else pull my trailers. And htey understand.

Most perfect example of why I don't let people borrow them...
Last spring my nieghbor let a guy that worked for him take his truck and trailer to the job site. He gets a call about 15 minutes later that the guy was in an accident. The trailer wasn't balanced very well and started to bounce. The guy didn't have alot of experience pulling trailers and ended up jack knifed in the opposite lanes. Totalled the truck and trailer. needless to say, he doesn't loan his truck or trailers out anymore either! haha
