198 Turns in 24.7 Miles

The Location: Angeles Crest Highway in Northern Los Angeles County
The Destination: Newcomb's Ranch, a popular roadside diner frequented by sport bikes, Harley-type cruisers, and Hot Rodders.
The Participants: Lynn Park in one of his 427 Street Cobras (undercar exhaust, and a HARDTOP!); another original 427 Competition Cobra, driven by its owner who happens to have ANOTHER 427 Comp Cobra; an original 289 Cobra driven by its owner, and yours truly in his fiberglass replica.

Angeles Crest Highway is a two-lane road from the 210 Freeway north, passing 3 or 4 ski resorts, past the quaint town of Wrightwood, then finally meeting up with I 15, the road to Las Vegas.

We left Lynn Park's house about 10:30, and headed north up "the Crest". The Crest is your typical CURVY mountain road, with the longest straight stretch about 100 yards long, and the straight stretches are few and far apart.

We averaged about 45 MPH, just a leisurely cruise really, with a few bursts on the straights up to maybe 80 MPH, then HARD on the brakes to set up for the next turn.

We had a nice late breakfast/early lunch, then back down the mountain. The weather was perfect, high 60's to low 70's, and we passed quite a few areas of snow still piled against the granite mountain on the northern, shaded sides of the road.

Edley,

SoCal has some of the best roads in the world. There are some great ones in the Alps of Northern Italy that have more spectacular views. And the run down into Monte Carlo over the Alps has an incredable excitement factor due to the tight switchbacks and the remarkable destination.

The Ridge Road through the Smoky Mountains is another amazing road and the Tail of the Dragon is pretty neat, too.

But, for the greatest combination of driving roads and weather, it's hard to beat this place. I'll take the combination of Highway 33 North out of Ojai then East on Lockwood Valley to Frazier Park above anything in the USA.

I have a new camera. I'll take some next time a rally goes that way. Here's one I took on a recent rally Near Ojai.

Sorry, no pics. I am camera-impaired, and technologically SLOW when it comes to uploading pics into the computer; I do HOPE to change that last bit of info by this summer.

The Crest Highway is also a really good place to see bikers over-drive their skill level, and conspire to turn themselves and their cafe racers into what the local hospitals call "donor-cycles." Parts is parts, they say.

Here's one of the sideroads.

Notice the use of dirt berms rather than steel guardrails. The "knee draggers" like this more. If they miss a corner, all they do is lay it over and slide into the berm. The only other vehicles on a Saturday were sportbikes and paramedics for the sportbikes.
