HELP -- Removing Scratch in Billet Aluminum??
Greetings!
I have some scratches in a piece of billet aluminum that's WAY too expensive to just replace. The piece is easily removable from the car to work on a bench, and the scratches aren't too deep. What's the best procedure for removing the scratch and returning the piece to it's original mirror finish? Bryon |
Depending on how deep, wet sand starting with 400 grit working up to 1000-1500 grit then polish.
If it could get scratched again you may want to coat with clear laquer or hard andonize the part. |

After you get all polished up, coat it with ZoopSeal. It won't prevent scratches but it will keep the billet from oxidizing and spotting. Pretty pricey but great stuff for aluminum.

I ended up working the scratch out with 600 grit, then worked the piece down with 1000, and 2000 grit papers. I followed that up with aluminum polish on a buffing wheel. After a couple of final passes with Mothers and the buffing wheel, the part's better than it was originally. The whole process took quite a bit of time, though. Bryon |
