Snake Bite Prevention

I'm bringing home another Cobra finally! This time I've got kids to worry about. I seem to remember that somebody makes a mat type of deal that unrolls to cover the pipes when exiting the car and rolls back up to tuck into the passenger compartment. It would be nice to have one to help protect the kids beyond the normal speeches about hot pipes, wait for me to let you out ect. Does anybody know who makes these things or should I go find a condemned building, steal some asbestos and sew it between a bunch of the wifes oven mits!

Bug,
I think it may be more of a false security and remembering to put down etc.. Just help em out because at least you can watch what a young one may not even worry about. I know this is not much help... sorry

You can purchase the blankets from a welding supply store

Keith Craft sells them designed to roll up and down for the Cobra pipes.

I got the stuff from a store here that was a type of exhaust insulation and the finish was chrome. I just cut it to the size I needed and put snaps in on the passenger side and it folded up by the seat. It was thick enough that when the door was opened it would fall most of the way on its own. But you could put your hand on it and barely feel any warmth at all.

Ron :)

Cheaper than a skin graft!

REAL 1 04-24-2008 04:03 PM

I just put a towel down over the pipes when the passenger is getting out and put it back in the trunk when done.

Easy and the price is right.

Thanks guys! I'll protect the passengers but I wonder how long before I get bit..lol..It's kinda like riding a motorcycle you know sooner or later you're going to be in a wreck it's just a matter of when..lol..

Real 1 - Doesn't the towel just fry on the pipes? I was wearing fleece jacket one day and went to look under the car...just grazed the pipe and melted my jacket. I normally just tell passengers to stay put until I can walk around and help them out.

Years of sidepipes/bikes have taught me a couple of things:

1) Always wear jeans when in a Cobra or on a bike.
2) Always tell people "WATCH THE PIPES!" when they are getting in/on (if its hot) and definitely when they are getting out of/off the thing. This is really important for the Cobra, as most typical people (i.e. Camry drivers) aren't expecting a 1400 degree pipe sitting outboard of the rocker panel.

My buddy had my Cobra for a weekend. He likes to wear shorts... now he has a semi-permanent memory of the weekend on the back of his calf.

For kids, I usually pick them up and set them in the car. The problem is when you get some lil' porker that you can't lift, he can't jump in, and he doesn't have the coordination to get in. He gonna get burned!

Bug,

Check out your local welding supply store and you will find small splatter blankets approx. 15"x15". They are black and are very soft and will protect those forgetfull individuals from a painful snake bites.
My wife attached a couple of straps to them and then I attached them to the inside of the car (rolled up when not in use) with snaps. You just un-roll them after you open the door and there you are......snake bite protection.

I have friend that is diabetic and his snake bite was very painful and slow to heal, so the effort is worth it.

Best Regards, Bill

I jet hot coated my side pipes and I was going to do the same to a pair of heat shields to minimize scaring.

Superformance makes one for the roadsters. A rep of theirs told me about them at SEMA.

Got the bug:

I use 100%Terry Cloth (no polyester which melts) towels but I have coated pipes. I put them on quick, help out the passenger and take them off quick.

I would never leave them on any pipes very long.

I'm just working on callouses...

I figure I do this a few dozen times and I'll develop a big callousy corn that will be impervious to such things. Sniff Sniff, where's the barbeque?

I only did this once...you learn quickly. 1 second singe yielded this inside of 30 minutes:
