Why would any big block Cobra owner sweat MPG?, I've never checked it and never will. People have ask me and I say. 'I have no idea and don't care', If you sweat MPG or value, you shouldn't own one......IMHO.

Agreed. When people ask me about my MPG I tell them "you can literally see the gas gauge needle moving before your eyes.":LOL: |

Like Patrick I have an answer for mileage inquiries ... The fuel gauge moves a little slower than the Tach. I do know roughly what the fuel consumption of my big block is but only because I need to know if I can get home or not. I can not run pump gas because of it's compression. My big block is 540 inches and drinks at a rate of about 4 miles per gallon but every gallon is so much fun.

Checking the range of the car for long trips and knowing how much further I can go before stopping. Other than that it really shouldn't be a factor.
The MPG is just a matter of division.
I am surprised I get over 10mpg.
Worrying about good gas mileage is kinda like people complaining about buying 200+ dollars a piece tires.
Spend all this money on a awesome car and then go cheap on what can hold you on the road.

289 stroked to 331, 390HP, 360 ft-lbs. Over 20 mpg highway, approx 15 in town last time I checked. Recently I only know that mine uses approx 2/3 the gas that Tony's uses!

With my stroked tunnel port motor set up and thirsty demon carbs (1450 cfm total) I average about 10 mpg highway and 5 mpg in town. The 5 speed tremec helps, but driving style is certainly reflected in the fuel economy ...or lack thereof.
Let's see, downhill in a hurricane I bet I could get over 20 mpg!
Funny story:
My friend and I approached a red light two weeks ago and we pulled up next to a Toyota Prius. My buddy had the driver roll down his window so he could yell over to him..."The gas you're saving, we're using!" The guy behind the wheel was a good sport and said he was happy it was going to a good cause. :LOL:
My brother in law drives a Hummer H2....the Prius owners aren't so forgiving...%/

511" F.I., 3.31:1 rear, tall 5th, 26.5" tire = 1900 rpm @ 75 mph and 14 mpg all day long chugging along effortlessly at 80 mph in the fast lane.

Oh, I forgot my '06 F150 cruises about the same 1900 rpm freeway pushed by a little 5.4 and barely wrings out 16 mpg if your real carefull.
I have no idea what the truck weighs but it's gotta be a load when you consider the 5.4 liter is using almost as much as the 8.4 liter Shelby

ERA car, stock 428 CJ w/750 Holley got 11-mpg w/mechanical dist.
I switched to a vacuum advance distributor; no other changes and now 14-mpg
The vacuum dist is stock Ford with Pertronix, curved to factory specs for a 4V 390.
Of course if I want to I can get about 6-mpg…

I wish somebody would do the math..
If I spent 1000$ to get better mileage
Mostly smaller cam,carb,intake.
how long would it take to amortize the investment.
I drive a 500$ mitsubishi. It gets 30 mpg.
why spend 30,000$ to get 40mpg??

427 Windsor, snotty cam, 0.82 overdrive, & 3.73 rear end.
On a 70 mph cruise, I'll get about 12 mpg. Around town, I get 8-10 mpg.

I'm waiting for my 342Roush. What can I expect for mileage? Should I get it set up a certain way re carbs or gearing? It's not too late seeing that the roller won't be done until early July.

533, dual 750's, I'm in the 6 to 9 range currently. If I ever find a way to hook this thing up it will probably go down some. Car came with TA's which are useless for traction.

There is a very good articel on this in one of the Chevy magazines; google wideband and tuning a car for fuel mileage. With 3:73 gears a 750 MD carb combined with a 540 hp / 406, they got in the low 20s.

We have been tunning with a wide band O2 sensor. It is the best way by far to tune a carb. We have seen the transitions circuits be way to lean and beyond pig rich. It makes a huge improvement in driveabilty when it is right. |
