Jim, we actually have met and I see your car go by all the time while visiting my folks. They live by the airport on the corner of Sing Sing and Chambers where you can head to Tompkins Corners or the Airport.
I met you one day at the dealership parking lot while stopping for lunch at ElMonties. Love your car. If I can get just a little spare time to finish the Cobra I will surely be stopping by. Aaron |
Does anybody know if the retractable plate brackets that pop up when stopped and retract at speed are still available and if so where you can buy them?

Warren , Rick etc :
http://www.fquick.com/videos/Electri...e_Bracket/4808 For other web sites, use the search term: retractable license plate brackets However, CT had 2 plates, then went to 1, then went back to 2 when the police wanted to be able to see the license plate when driving toward the auto in the opposite lane. |
Guys, these cars use like $30-$50 (maybe even $100 for a long trip) in gas for an afternoon's cruise, and you are worried about a front plate ticket ($100 or so) that you'll get maybe once a year? MAYBE. Maybe once every 3 years. Maybe never. You have to think of these things on a relative basis money-wise.
I haven't run a front plate on anything in like 10 years. I've gotten a few tickets over the years, but it's rare. In Chicago proper, they'll ticket your parked car for no front plate. Like if it's sitting by the valets in front of the club... I look at it as a tax. I pay a tax of about $100 per year and can do what I want regarding a front plate. Typically, they won't mess with old cars, Cobras, and the such. The daily drivers they will, especially in small towns. Anyway, just pay the $100... |
Hello All,
Fun, out of the ordinary thread, I enjoy reading it. Especially the last post from cdog. Unless you get more than 2 of these tickets I'd not really worry about messing up the look of my rigg. Agreed with cdog... f them :) Cheers, Mike |
Hey CDog,
Gotta go with your thinking on this. There's just no good way to mount up a front license plate on the coupe. Retractable bracket or not,the only place would be the front air intake area. Most of the cops are more interested in the car then breaking chops about the plate. Besides...by the time they would see the front plate I would be loooooooong gone!! Keep the shiny side up my friend. Rick |
Ok, Here is an idea you decide if it's good or bad. Hang the plate from the top of the oval opening where the radiator is located, the brackets must be hinged so the plate can be retracted upwards laying flat inside and out of sight (unless your on your hands and knees). When pulled over for no visible front plate just explain that the wind must have pushed it up there and proceed to swing it back down to satisfy the officer...it might work. Me I have been driving my car for several years without a problem (knock on wood) no front plate. I have a picture in my gallery of a bracket that attaches to the bottom quick jack bolt that holds the plate. Nothing attaches to to turn indicator. The bracket is 1/4" chromed steel. It's pretty sturdy. This came with the car when I bought it, but I haven't used it.
John Don, I posted this before I saw your suggested electronic bracket. That would be the ultimate solution. |
I have a 1" x 3" black wire grill set inside the nose opening with the license
plate hanging behind it. It is hung from the top by stainless steel key rings. When I hit 30 mph it is totally swung back so you can't see it, when you stop it returns to normal - very simple and so far so good on not getting stopped but they don't push it here. |
I haven't run a front plate in YEARS on my Cobra, and HAVE been stopped for various things along the way. One time was a 'rookie cop' who was sure my side pipes were illegal, for instance, they weren't. He never noticed the missing plate OR the missing 'safty sticker' we also have to run. I keep the Safty sticker on it's 'broken bracket' in the trunk and would have suggested it just 'recently fell off and I been meaning to fix that ossifer...' :D
HOWEVER, recently one of local Cobra owners DID get a ticket for no front plate, $75 I think was the fine. Flip, never realized your plate was on a swivel, good call! |
