Ideas for Removing Tape
Hi Everyone,
When I had the body on the body dolly, I had put the tape that is used for masking off areas during the painting of the car to hold on things like the trunk and doors. Since it had been on for a while, it has decide to stay permenantly which I certainly wasn't expecting. :eek: I've tried a number of things to get it off including First Clean and light sanding. Neither has been overly effective. I could use a coarser sand paper but am concerned about taking some of the fiberglass if I go that approach. Any ideas on how to get this stuff off without damaging the body parts? Thanks. Mike |
"Unstick". It's used by picture framers and sold by framing suppliers.

Gook Off I think you can buy it at WalMart or Office Depot

There are a lot of solvents that will take off the tape. But whatever you get, test it in an inconspicuous place first. Wouldn't you just hate it if the solvent ate gel-coat/fiberglass?

Simple green in full strength and painted on with a paint brush (out of the sun) works great.

Bill, I think we may have some Simple Green at home so I'll try that first. Warren, That would be a bummer. I plan on using some on some scrap gelcoated fiberglass panels that I have larying around for me to experiment with. I guess this would qualify as experimenting. :3DSMILE: Mike |
I've been using Naptha for many years because I have yet to find a plastic it attacks unlike most other solvents. WD-40 also works well but the Naptha softens the glue a lot faster and doesn't leave residue behind. I've even used it on polycarbonate which is easily fogged by solvents.
Not to mention it's a lot cheaper than stuff like goof-off... It's old school but it works... |

Thanks Everyone for all of the suggestions.
We had some Simple Green so I tried that first. It took a couple of applications to soften up the old tape but I was able to get all of the tape and residue off. A little clean up with First Clean and it looks pretty good at this point. Thanks again for all of the help. Mike |
Bring it to Arizona and let it set in the sun for a couple of days. I guarantee the tape will come off..
