Question about cleaning real knock off wheels and tires
Hi everyone,
I just got a Cobra from Backdraft racing on Saturday, I used to have a Classic Roadsters kit which I built myself. Anyway, on my new one it has the real knock off wheels, which they call the E-T III. In the wheel maintenance it says to use a combo of windex and flour to clean them off and not to use any harsh chemicals. Couple questions: 1) Is it best to spray the windex on the wheel or on the towel and clean? And then follow up with the flour or the other way around? 2) If I want to use tire dressing, is it okay if some gets on the wheel (of course I will wipe it away)? |
Did you get this from Jay at Vintage? WHere are you located?
I am told those directions in the manual are for the old rims not the new current style and any good aluminum polish will work. I used the mothers aluminum polish "White" on mine last week and they came out good. The directions state if you rub on and the rag doesn't turn black the metal isn't polishable. Mine turned black.;) Marc |
I used Mother's also and had excellent results. It is non-abrasive.

Great, thanks for the help. I did get it from Jay. I am located in NJ.

Bill,
Your email address still does not work for me. Marc already nailed the question. Your wheels are actually the Vintage Wheel and not the Team 3 the directions cover. To answer your email, the title will arrive later via mail. Good to see you on CC. |
The Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish works great. I tried the Billet polish and found the white stuff easier to apply and remove.
I'd stay away from the tire dressing. It just ends up spraying the car and probably isn't that great for the paint. A little Vinylx on the tires gives a nice shine. |
I use Scotchbrite and saltwater on my Vintage Wheels upon my perky butt CCX.......

I have pin-drive wheels from Vintage Inc. Del Mar ,Ca. So far I have not had to polish them mainly due to living in a hot dry climate in AZ. All I do, is use a spray bottle with dish soap and water to clean the tires and wheels. Then spray on some matted tire protector (on the tires), wipe off the excess and let dry.
Next re-spray the wheels with the spray soap solution and clean off any over spray and yuck, then wipe clean. My wheels still look like new and very bright..maybe in a couple of years I'll have to polish them? Anyway, that's my two cents. Bill |
