Best polish for uncoated aluminum rims
What is the best polish for uncoated aluminum rims? Autosol, Busch's Super Shine, Mothers, Meguires, Blue Magic, Wenol????

Autosol. Expensive but you only need a little.
Last time I polished my rims, I jacked up the car so the tires were off the ground. Then I could easily "reach" the rim and rotate it as necessary. Of course, after about an hour working on the front rims, I was tempted to start the Cobra and put it in gear ... and just hold the rag against the rotating rim. Tempted, but not foolish enough to do it. :p:D:3DSMILE:**):) |
Meguire's Hot Rims. I was very surprised it out performed Mother's.
I use the Mother's small power-ball to apply it after taping off the cast inner rim. Great mirror shine with no haze. |
Flitz followed by Wenol. They have a much "harder" shine. Nothing lasts more than a week on magnesium however.

I use regular bleached flour and water (mix it into a paste) and rub with a clean t-shirt. Heard about this from Vintage Motorsports.

I just recently cleaned the wheels on my F250. I had not cleaned them, rather polished them in several years and they were looking bad.
I bought a Mothers power ball $25. and Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish $5.00. Got my 18volt cordless and went to town. The wheels look brand new. The battery lasted for one wheels so while I was using one I charged the other. Worked out great. Fred (392 Cobra) recommended I try using some spray Shout from the laundry detergent isle at the grocery store. $2.59 I thought what the heck, Ill try it. If your wheels are dirty from brake dust that is in hard to get to areas and small curves, this stuff is like magic. Spray it on let it set for a minute or two and wash it off with the hose. It did not put a shine like they were new but they were clean as a whistle and the cleaning with the power ball took about half the time after I sprayed the Shout on them. I know it sounds crazy ... but it works. |

Can the Powerball be cleaned for reuse or is it junk after 4 wheels? |
Yes, I cleaned it with soap and water and it looks brand new.
Sure there is some wear but it will last a long time. It also comes with an extenstion for deep wheels or hard to get to places and you can buy new pads for the ball when it wears out. But I am telling you after putting it through the ringer with the truck wheels it still looks good. |
I have no complaints with Mother's Mag & Aluminum polish...
takes me about 10-15 minutes per wheel. Worst part is cleaning the polish off of the matte-finish wheel center... NO I'm not polishing the center, but always seem to get a little on there from the rag when working in that area. So far, have only polished twice in the last year... but I only drive in fair weather, & we don't have any humidity to speak of. I also bought some of the Eagle One Nano-Polish, but have only used it on the ceramic-coated sidepipes so far. Works very similar, & got good results. |
Slick61 - Why not polish the center of the wheels?

Got it. The center of the wheels on my SPF are pretty smooth and appear to be painted/coated. I normally just take a rag that has a slight amount of polish on it and quickly polish the centers.
The Mother's Mag polish (works well) but I also bought some Meguiar's to try out. I tried Mother's Billet on the wheels, but didn't think it worked as well as the mag polish. |
