badges

I have made a few badges out of stainless. We have a local knife dealer to etch the lettering.
We used these badges to cover holes when we moved the mirrows onto to the windshield post.

Those are some sweet looking badges!

Let's get a couple things straight here. The numbers / badges on the sides of a car has ALWAYS been there to tell people what you have under the hood. -NOT to tell people what "body style" you have.

Look at every muscle car made. Corvette's, Chevelles, Chargers, 'Cuda's, Mustangs, etc.............. They ALL came with small blocks OR big blocks in the SAME body. The only way you knew what was in it was by the badges or painted on emblems on the hood or side of the car. The 440 Challenger was the same car / body as the 340 Challenger. -Different hood and paint maybe, but the same body.

Leave it to Shelby to do something like put a lower-powered 428 into a car that advertises having a high-powered 427 and sell it to the public without telling them. I guess he could tell people that the 427 badge on the side was to tell people what "body style" they were looking at, but that would be typical Shelby snake-oil.

-I better check my chili. Maybe I bought the small block mix on accident!

However, as Ron pointed out earlier, we are talking REPLICA'S here. If you want to put a 427 badge on a SC, then by all means do it. Afterall, that's what they came with originally and that is what you are REPLICATING.
Bottom line is, it's YOUR car, do what makes you feel comfortable.

Badges? I don't need no stinkin' badges!

Be brave...go badgeless!

Whats under the hood? I recall in the late 60's early 70's, with GM car's in particular, you could never be sure WHAT you might find under the hood. A Buick or Pontiac motor in a Chevy, or vice versa. It was a big stink when people bought a brand name car and then discovered a different brand name motor under the hood. :D Hey, at least Shelby was 'keeping it in the Ford family'.

Around 1980 Oldsmobile was using 305 Chevys instead of 307 Olds motors, some owners finally looked under the hood and filed a class action suit. GM had to include fine print in sales brochures and owners manuals stating "Your GM vehicle may contain an engine of similar displacement from one of our manufacturers"

We had a Impala wagon at work that had a 307 olds engine in it. (what a dog that was) 1982 Firebirds and T/A's went to Chevy engines as Pontiac dumped that miserable 301.

OK, this is all quite fascinating. But let's get down to brass tacks, as it were. I'm planning to troll some of the local bars this weekend, and was wondering if everyone thought it would be all right to place a discreet badge saying something like "Mr. 10 inches" on my lapel. It is possible that I may not exactly have that, uh, powerplant at my disposal, but after all, it is my lapel, and I think whatever I choose to do in this regard is OK. Am I conflicted, or simply right?

Ned,

Let's say you were dressing up as an Elvis replica for Halloween. And perhaps you did not have Elvis's singing abilities, money, drug problems and maybe you managed to get off the toilet alive after you last bowl movement. Does that mean you should not put on the flashy outfit, wig and sunglasses? :JEKYLHYDE  ;)

Nedsel 09-29-2008 12:55 PM

Well, there you are. Life is full of tough questions to which I have no good answers.**) Nuts.

GreenSnakeDoc 09-29-2008 02:57 PM

Yes, I was feeling so guilty with 427 badges on the fenders and a 351 under the bonnet, that I stroked that 351 to 427 cu.in. Now, when I'm asked, "Do you have a 427 in there?" I can honestly reply, "Yup.":3DSMILE:

Please fit yourself with a hidden camera. I really want to see what happens!

TerrysSPF 09-29-2008 04:56 PM

Nedsel- After the pants come down, you can always tell the ladies that your smallblock is a replica of the REAL thing!;)

FWB 09-29-2008 05:46 PM

i then am doing a great injustice with my 427 badges when i'm stroked to 468

Jim Maxwell 09-30-2008 07:29 PM

Ned, is that stroked or unstroked?

Regarding "conflicted or simply right" , are the those the only choices we have?

Neither seems completely descriptive of what comes to mind.

About the Elvis thing....huh?

Yes, that is the site. I found them in the "Gallery" under "Custom". Then at the bottom, click on the Flickr gallery for more pictures. Here is a link to their "Custom" gallery.

You will see them about 6 rows down. He has a lot of nice stuff. Check out this custom Cobra badge.

Their e-mail address is under "Contact". Just shoot them an e-mail with what you want and have them draw it up for you.

Terry - have you ever thought of putting a 427 tag on your car's fender when, in fact, you're packing maybe 600 cubic inches instead, so you can really surprise someone? That's sorta how it is with the lapel pin - I just don't want to scare her off by being overly honest, you know?

TerrysSPF 10-02-2008 06:50 PM

Nedsel: I know what you're talking about. Kinda the same reason I wear loose pants!;)

I had a friend in Ohio that owned a 69 Camaro with a Z-28 cowl hood with "302" on it.
-He actually had a 502 crate with about 550HP under the hood!:D

Anybody that would put a 427 badge on a car without a 427 in it ought to be shot...:p
Now having said that... anybody that would put a small block in a Cobra ought to be shot...:p again

Nothing else matters. :-)

Does anyone know where I can by 427 Cobra emblems without the word Ford on them? Thanks.

Dwight 05-05-2011 05:12 AM

Why?
What is wrong with Ford?
