Wrong on BOTH counts, the SPF and the BDR use parts not designed for a Cobra. BDR uses BMW suspension, not Toyota.

You got that right! So exactly what parts are intended to be on a cobra? Is there a list somewhere?
I would gladly take suspension that is designed by an oem that is used on a replica. I would think alot more money was spent by the oem (like BMW) on suspension testing than what some replicas builders do when puting together their tubular a-arms and such.
Every replica out there uses parts throughout the industry to make it all work. Some replicas fab their own parts while others start by using an oem base and build around that.
They are all replica's except for the originals.....

I believe the SPF uses Dana Rear ends, BMW radiators (I think), a VW Steering column. All new parts however. I test drove both (along with a FF, ERA). The Backdraft and SPF are both fine cars. I had a personal list of things I was looking for, and for me the SPF was the perfect choice. But with all makes and models, there are pros and cons each.

My ERA has a BMW clutch slave cylinder, but I don't want to talk about it, you never heard that from me...

Last time I checked BMW's handled pretty good - Good choice Backdraft

I like both cars. when i bought my spf the closest backdraft dealer was 6 hours away, and he rubbed me the wrong way talking about registration (he was dead wrong, but thats another story). at the time i couldnt find a local backdraft to even see let alone drive.

one thing i dont like (personal taste) is the gauges in the backdraft. clearly this can be fixed....dinobites car is a fine example :) just factor in the budget. then again those gauges might actually work which could be a plus  hehehe reminds me i gotta find time to swap the water temp gauge

I also like 15" wheels but thats just me

Superformance is a fantastic car, chassis is very well engineered and handling is very good as well.
The craftsmanship as far I have seen is perhaps the best among the fiberglass cars.

Some 4 years have gone by. How do we feel about the comparison of SPF vs BDR today?

Bill Bess 06-09-2012 06:23 AM

Well Okay, here's my silly opinion. SFP and Backdraft are both excellent replicas, both have their own great qualities and values. Both cost more up front and return more when you go to sell them. Both are made in a foriegn country (not America) in a hugh factories that are run by people that most likely pay low wages (assumption). Both are not exact copies of a real Shelby, but look great and are high quality.
These cars are for folks that don't want to, or can't build their own cobra and also want to enjoy bragging about the name more than the mechanical abilities and construction of the car. There are plenty of oustanding kits made in America that are engineered to perform, maybe the best are ERA and Kirkham, along with the VW of kit casr FFR.
There are some good buys out there on all brands, it's most important to understand what's in the replica your interested in and it's percieved value by you.
Enjoy whatever one you choose...they are all great little hot rods.

4 years ago I bought a BDR because my fat ass won't fit in an SPF (looked at them first actually).

I had my SPF for four years, as solid as the day picked it up, no rattles, panel rubs, etc. yes I have had stupid problems that should have never have happened with better quality control, but I had those with my backdraft also. I can comfortably say I had at least 15 issues with both new cars for a total of 30. Funn when I fixed them they never came back. Problems between two included:
Turn signal didn't wk
Leaking brake caliper
Speedo cable
Light relay
Electrical short
Ground cable
Headlight dimmer
Seat belt clasp failure
Exhaust leak between header and side pipe
Ebrake cable rubbing half shaft
Paint damage panel needed reworked

As I have said in past buy used, let a dumb sheet like me sort it for your driving pleasure

I like the fact BDR has available headers, pipes, drive shaft, radiator etc. on thier roller all to fit the 5.0 Coyote (good prices on dressed crate motors from Ford, along with a power curve that suits a light car in road race applications)
