Quick Release Steering Wheel Hubs
Did a bit of research on this in old threads.
Based on what I found, appears to be one source of these for Cobras, Sterling Replicars Pinless Quick Release Steering Wheel Hub? Is this correct? Also, has anybody successfully registered a street car here in the Golden State with one of these? Think I need to shed a few pounds....:CRY: As always, appreciate member input. Bob |
Bob we build our own, In a mannor that is hard to tell that it is a quick release ,but a lot will depend on what column you our using and what directional assemble you have. We use a custom column with the original vw type 1 directional and hide the release button in the hub behind the wheel. If you contact me I could maybe send you photos to give you an idea.

Sweet Mfg.
I used a standard stock car type quick release by Sweet Mfg.
This is one of those things where function is as important as fit. I could have bought a bolt-on unit, but couldn't find one that had a tight spline fit (returned two of them). The Sweet unit was just that...sweet...but had no bolt-on adapter so I turned a sleeve on the lathe, set the adapter in place, and welded it on permanently. No slop at all...and very very nice function. |
CSCHWER; What model #ngr unit did you buy for you superformance and what mods did you make to allow it to fit. Looks like you made it fit into the existing spf outer housing. Looks like a clean retrofit. Two thumbs up!
PS; Does the wheel stick out further than before the quick release. Regards Carmine |

In CA there are only a few hurdles to register a car...
Brake and Light Inspection (sometimes, if the DMV asks for it). They don't check for steering wheels, or quick releases. CHP Inspection. They check the VIN and MSO and assign one if it doesn't have one. They didn't look at anything else and never even looked at the engine bay...mine was on a trailer at the time with the hood off and no seats or wheel at all. They didn't care. BAR Inspection. All they care about is the tailpipe and whether or not it runs. They don't care about he wheel. DMV. They never see the car. Therefore...no issue. Are they illegal? Don't know, but the last time I got pulled over, I pulled the wheel off, set it in the passengers seat, and stepped out. The only thing the cop said was "wow, cool." |
If you don't tell them about the quick disconnect, there's nothing to sweat!.
