Overheating - good news
It looks like I am getting closer to solving my heating issues. Went out today with the temperature at 95 F and it only went to 98 C one time otherwise it stayed at 95 C or lower which is a vast improvement before I started. Before it would go to 110 C and higher. The most recent changes were a shroud on the puller fan, a fan on the water pump and ducting going into the radiator. Chas

If you have more than 50% anti-freeze, it's to much. Most Cobras can run with 20 -25% anti freeze and 75% distilled water. I have seen 5.0 and 427 over heat because of to much anti-freeze.

Mine was runing warm and I found out my fans were not facing the right way, double check that.

Double checked the fans and both are blowing in the right direction. Thanks for the suggestion.

Are you running undersized pulleys? My motor ran too hot with undersized pulleys. Not enough cooling air passing through the radiator will prevent enough coolant from being exposed to enough air. That is why folks go to great lengths (adding pusher fans, high capacity puller fans, shrowding, etc or even bigger radiators) to expose as much coolant to as much cooling air as possible.
Moving the coolant too slowly through the system will have the same effect as having insufficient air flow through the radiator: in a given amount of time, less coolant is exposed to cooling air. The hp gains from undersized pulleys is immaterial in these cars. When I got rid of the undersized pulleys, I no longer needed a pusher fan. |
What are you using to measure the temperature? I've never seen an in dash gauge that wasn't at least 5-10 degrees wrong.

Ya...Jim is correct regarding gauges. Check things out with an infered tester, you can get a neat little pocket unit from Summit for around $30.00. In addition, check with another gauge and compare it with your in dash unit.

Chas, the fans may be going the right direction, but the fans themselves, might have to be turned around, fans are made to be puller or pusher, you have to look at the pitch of the fan blades, you should not have to run a fan on your water pump, mine were going the right direction, the blades were on backwardes, look into that it is very important. Thanks for all the replies. Before I added the cowl ducting and the second fan my engine would go to 110C and higher. The list started by changing the gauge to a mechanical gauge which I put in water until it boiled and showed 100C at boiling. It had a restrictor plate so I replaced it with an 180 degree thermostat. I checked the pulleys and they are equal. I put an aluminum radiator with a shroud and a puller fan. I then put 25/75 percent antifreeze with water wetter. Each step helped some so I guess it is an accumulation of things. If the outside temperature outside is under 90 degrees it usually runs at 88C unless in stop and go traffic or teasing a Vet. I personally don't like riding in 90 deree heat so I may not have solved the total problem, it stays way cooler than when I started. Thanks again everybody, you are the greatest. Chas
