302 or not
I recently purchased a supposed Cobra Motor. I'm a newbe as far as this is concerned and the code that I see on the block is 34 E7TE CA. What does this tell me?

This would most likely be a 1987 302 motor, E=1980s, E7= 1987. The "T" might designate this as a Truck motor but I'm not certain.

The code looks like it is a 87 (E-80's), (7-year), but I'm not aware of any Cobras being produced by Ford at that time? For some reason I'm drawing a blank, but I don't think the Cobra II was built in that year- besides it wasn't a real cobra anyway by most accounts......:)
About the only way it could be a "Cobra" motor is if someone had it in his replica.

Is it possible it came out of one of the AutoKraft cars that were sold through Ford dealers in that time frame. I can't remember the year, but I remember seeing an Auto Kraft Cobra with a Fuel Injected 302 or a 351 option in our local Ford dealer. It must have been around '87 since the '86 5.0 was the first F.I. motor.
Just my poor memory at work,
Jeff

I believe it's just a plain 'ol 302, nothing wrong with that, but it's not anything Cobra except maybe the valve covers probably.

That is a pretty good year for a block because they had a higher nickel content than some of the preceeding years (pre-86), plus it came with roller lifters. My guess, it was in someones Cobra kit car because I don't recall there being any offering from Ford for a Cobra during that time frame.

I thought the pre 74 blocks had the higher nickle content, and the later blocks used the thin wall casting technology. That's why the newer blocks split in half.
