Either I found an unusual buyer, or those prices were low, even for 1973. In September 1975, I sold CSX 3121 to David Ruocco for $23000. My car was clean and sorted, but just a plain old 427 street roadster.

Shortly after I sold the car, it became slightly famous, being featured as a two page spread in Automobile Quarterly, on the cover of the book "Modern Classics; Great Cars of the Postwar Era", and in the center of the poster "The Now and Forever Cobra".

Ruocco sold the car to (I think) Ivan Petkus in 1989 for $395000. I had a reunion with it at his home outside of Chicago in 1991 after it had been treated to a new exhaust system, a refreshed engine, and some cosmetic work, but was still wearing the same (incorrect) red paint that it had received in 1974. It reappeared in Hemmings during the market dip of the late 90s asking for $325000. Current whereabouts unknown.

I recall being told by my dad I was a dope for shelling out $5,500 for a 289 Cobra in '72. It was all I had saved plus a bit more. When I sold it 4 years later for $10K he was more silent. Then I turned around and bought 3227 for $24,000. The idea that I was nuts resurfaced. It quieted down pretty quickly as prices took off from there.

Sold my '61 Galaxie Starliner when I was a starving student in '76 for $500.
It took a long time, but I tracked it down after all these years. The current owner would be happy to sell it to me for $75k!
