Why?

My project is taking way too long to get off the ground, and I have two 427 blocks and lots of parts, but I have been thinking that for the driving I will probably do, a 390 or a 289 might be more fun overall. |
Wanna hear a engine that really turns my crank. If you have good speakers, sounds awesome. Guess it should, for $60,000.

I have a older Superformance #112 Cobra with a 460 SVO motor w/SCJ aluminum heads. The car has been at a number of tracks (Sebring,VIR, Gainesville etc.) great motor and great handling. I have no complaints.

It's a "ways down the road" yet, and I'm still kicking tires - so to speak. About the only things I'm sure of so far; I will probably use 17" instead of 15" wheels. I like the look of the Halibrand knock-off. Brakes and suspension will not be exotic, I want off the shelf availability. I like the Tremec 500 transmission ratios. It must have both roll bars. It will be white, likely with orange stripes. Interior will not be terribly fancy - I might install a stereo. No leather.... Trying to decide on a kit is Job One, and I'm still not certain which ones I like. Lone Star has my attention with the "big, dumb 9" live axle" and the 4 inch body stretch. I am NOT in love with an IRS, though I realize that makes me a redneck talking to the debutantes at The Ball. I still would prefer to build a 460 over an FE motor - Alan, I like your input! Cost may be easier to swallow, and I'm not a purist in the sense that a kit would be improper without the FE motor. I'll be on the fence for awhile on that one too. My preferred powertrain is still; 460/aluminum heads - Tremec T 500 - Currie built 9" with gears in the 4.10 range. Gotta have the cash in hand to buy the kit, and without a lottery windfall that remains months away. |
Neo - save your money on the stereo - you will never turn it on. You will
have two external speakers that make the sweetest sound. |

Having the 500 TKO's 3.28 first gear will render it useless for the street with a 4.10 rear gear. I'm running a lone star with 3.73s and a TKO 600 (2.9x first) and first gear is waaayyyy too low, almost unusable for the street. I actually would think a set of 3.30 to 3.00 rear gears (or somewhere in that range) would be a lot better. You'll still have a lot of grunt out of the hole and won't have to rev the snot out of the BB to get it rolling. I find myself sometimes actually starting out in second for easy driving and I'm running 17s too. Dave |
The first thing everyone asks about the motor is, "Is it a 427 FE"?. Why not just do it right and use any of the FE combos. and have the one everyone is expecting.
Any Ford is good and plenty of Chevys make a great Cobra, but having the original type motor is part of the Cobra Thing.....just my silly opinion. Oh Ya..there's not a whole lot of money difference when building these things..all the motors are expensive. Old Bill |
I can't ever remember anyone being disappointed when I've opened my hood to reveal four hundred and sixty cubic inches of SVO motor. The educated observer would certainly appreciate a 427 side oiler but after that if you have to start explaining the facts about the number of FE motors that where in the original Cobra as opposed to side oilers....well then I think just having a big block ford in your Cobra is what matters most. That is if you have to have a big block. I had a Unique FIA w/a built 302 and it was almost as fast as my big block and I miss that car to this day. The man who bought the car died a mile from my house after loosing control and hitting a palm tree. Cool cars but not very forgiving.
