Cutting Axle Studs

I want to cut off the non-threaded portion of the studs on the Ford 9" rear axle. The studs are too long. When putting on the pin drives, the allen wrench doesn't go in enough to get enough bite on the nut ( only 3/16 or so)and it strips the nut.

Any reason not to do this?

I think the FFR guys have been doing that for quite a while w/o any incident that I'm aware of. I don't see the harm in it.

I cut mine off for that same reason. Be sure to put a nut on first so you can clean the tread after you cut them. I used a 3" or 4" cut off wheel on my hand grinder to cut them. Ken
