I have an Autolite alternator on my CSX aluminum block 482. Ruff. Ruff.
Did the OP ever get us his casting numbers? |
I don't think the internals of the engine make a great deal of difference on your personal ride, as far as the engine goes from an authenticity stand point. For myself, when I rebuilt my side oiler I did want to keep it as original as possible. But I was sure was tempted to go with more modern, stronger, better parts. There was some fear about using those 40 year old Le Mans rods, for instance. I dumped the soild roller cam and went with a flat tappet with specs that would have been available 'back in the day'. I retained the iron heads, but considered the weight savings I would have to give up by not using alloy. I retained the original alloy 2X4 intake. I ran even ran an old points and condensor distributor for awhile! I was bummed I had to settle for a 428 crank and considered buying a 427 crank with stock stroke. In short, I wanted to build the motor as close to original specs as I reasonably could. I wanted to get a feel for what it was like 'back in the day'. I did it for ME, not to impress anyone, not to recommend that style to anyone, just something I wanted to do.
I feel pretty good about and take a lot of pride in that motor, it's part of the fun factor for myself. The point type distributor got old in a hurry! It would miss badly after 6000 rpm or so and I'm left wondering HOW they got more rpm out a points style distributor back in the day. Currently MSD, with a red cap, I hate seeing that... :) |

[quote=FatBoy;894228]I also have a "red" MSD dizzy, but the cap has been painted satin black by Bill at Southern Automotive. It look much better than the garish red caps. :) Paul
Well, at least I don't have "bumble bee" yellow spark plug wires! I have to look into painting my cap too. Seems like a lot of work and you only get an increase of 5 HP. |

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend with my "garish" comment. It was only relevant if you were going for the "original" look. :o Paul |
Thanks for the heads up from a CC member who pointed out Club Cobra in general, myself and Mr. Mustang in particular, are being trashed talked by ng8264723 on his favored FE site.
Yet another trash talking newbie. I don't appreciate your ADVERTISING another site here on Club Cobra, let alone trash talking THIS site! Buy a banner ad and put your money where your mouth is. |

Paul, no offense taken. I like kidding around. I don't like the red cap either.
Patrickt, thanks for the heads up on the black cap. My painting skills aren't very good. I was always the kid with model car that fingerprints in it since the paint was way too thick. Slamming people on other sites, let alone slamming people on this site, for their opinions just isn't proper. We all have opinions, and we all have opinions on other people's opinions. Just agree to disagree. Even the big shots in the engine world, or any industry for that matter, can be wrong sometimes. No one is perfect and I'm first in that line. |
MSD black cap
Patrickt,
You are correct. I am running one on the Pro-Billet in my 351W (originally equipped with the Ford "big cap" and that hideous cap adapter). Don't know about the FE, but on the Windsor, I just had to cut off the L-shaped, spring-loaded mounting "screws" that came on this cap, and use the regular screws that came with the Pro-Billet instead. The Pro-Billet base had tapped holes for both the Ford pattern and the Chevy pattern caps (which is what this cap is). It is a welcome addition to the MSD lineup for those of us that like a more subtle/stock appearance! BTW, anybody know what MSD coats their can-type coils (e.g. Blaster) in? I tried painting my extremely red Blaster coil black, only to find that the paint would shed off at the least touch. Wound up stripping it to bare metal before it would take primer and paint. The red coating seemed to be a cross between an epoxy and rubber of some sort??? |
