As per SAAC registry:
Shipped to LA on SS Villanger 11/15/64. Invoiced to FoMoCo general accounting office.
(meaning a car used by executives in-house, like Chevy COPO cars) returned to Shelby in LA in '65 as a used car sold in '65 to Taylor American Automotive Enterprises in LA in "as-is" condition. Next known owner is Frank Jurin of Santa Rosa CA who advertised it for sale in 10/72 for $6,000, didn't sell. For sale again in '74. Acquired by Bob Epstein, Piedmont CA who sold in '75 Car now has Chrome wires dyed (Blk) int and flares and Boss 302 asking $14,000. End of known ownership. Presumably your guy bought it from Epstein and put it away.

Kurtmart,
Thanks so much. That was the history I was hoping to uncover. I never cease to be amazed by the twisting and frequently obscure paths these cars take as they move forward in time.
Each one is an epic story in itself. Thanks again for shedding additional light on the route this particular car took.
Ed

This has been a very interesting thread to follow.
"Barn finds" still do exist.

Yes, it's been an interesting thread, thanks Kurtmart. What info do you have on CSX 2346?
ES - I can start another thread if you would like, don't think this is a hijack as it pertains to same type of request.
A-Snake - the purchase price was merely my speculation, not based on actual. Sorry, should have clarified that.
I have other pictures if interested, let me know.

PurpleVenom,
I don't have a problem. Seems to be the same type of story/issue to me. I usually don't get real proprietary about thread real estate. Usually makes better threads for the other members.

OK PV. CSX 2346 Silver/Black int
Shipped to LA on SS Pacific Fortune 3/64. Invoiced by Shelby to Vel's Ford Sales Torrance CA. Car picked up by Vel's employee at Shelby. Remained unsold as of 8/64 Ownership unclear until late 70's. Next recorded owner T Micheal Speidel MN Repainted maroon. Car appeared at SAAC-8 Dearbron MI 7/83 taking 1st place in concours Cobra division and pictured in Shelby American #42. Purchased in mid 80's by George Gillette Nashville TN and appeared at Christies Monterey 8/90 where it was purcahsed by collector Jerry J Moore Houston TX. Then Barrett-Jackson 1/96 Scottsdale and bought by an anonymous buyer from Petersburg IL ( your friend?) Last known plate is "REAL ONE".
Unusual part is the close up of the tag in the engine bay says 1965 Cobra. It's really a '64!
Hope this helps.

I notice the Chassis plate for 2436 shows a PA#### for the engine number. Anyone know what the PA stands for?

CSX2225 is now in Gilroy and the engine and braking system is being rebuilt. It does not have the original block, it has a D1ZE BOSS 302 block with Hi po heads, proper balancer etc. It has a Shelby intake and a 650cfm Holley double pumper. It has OE visors, luggage rack, shifter and T10 transmission. All of the instruments appear to be OE.Other than the unfortunate fiberglass flares and Borani wheels the body and related parts are very original and in good condition. This car was last registered in 1977. It was delivered to a Ford exec in Mass. in 64 and sold a year later needing some paint and interior work??

As for the "1965 Cobra" tag, these were placed on any late Cobra delivered to any of the states whose DMV required them. Many states explained to Shelby American that the cars may have had chassis tags (finally, after almost 200 cars were built) but there was still no way to identify what exactly the car was supposed to be called. Hence the confusion on various original Cobra titles, identifying them as "Ford Cobra," "AC Cobra," "Shelby Cobra," "Ford Shelby" ad infinitum. In this car's case, it remained unsold at the Vel's dealership in CA through the summer of '64, by which point all Cobras shipped to dealers in CA had the "1965 Cobra" tags on them. Vel's likely mentioned to Shelby American that one of the cars in stock lacked the tag, and they were sent one to install themselves on 2346.

What a wonderful collection. I would love to dig through all those old technical manuals in the bookcases.
This reminds me of the Nethercutt Collection in So. Cal. if you are into V16 lincolns it is a great time to geek out on pre war cars .
Wish I could have been there,
Steve
