whats involved in getting the baffles out of the stock pipes? $2k + for new pipes seems like alot of cash.

Sparks,

Actually, changing out the mufflers on mine was probably some of the best money I've spent. I have before and after dyno's, and it is actually the cheapest horsepower you can "free up". Many people here do all sorts of expensive engine mods to get marginal gains in hp, but you still end up forcing it through your 2" core. When I changed out my mufflers, it changed the whole demeanor of the car for the better. I mean a completely different car from 2100 rpms and up in that the entire power curve was moved up.

Another thing is that I've cut out a few factory muffler cores, and all of them had the welds on either end cracked to where the center pipe was free to collapse and restrict even more flow.

Finally, a 3.5" core ain't better than a 3" core.

I take that she'd mean "NO DAMN WAY, they aren't even diamonds";)

I gained about 40+hp after I changed out my exhaust system to tuned headers and new sidepipes on my 347 sb w/Webers on my old FIA

sparks 11-20-2008 12:56 PM

$3k For Headers And Pipes Seem Like Alot For 10% Gains. I'm More Into The Sound. Maybe I'll Just Wait For Some Used Ones To Become Avail.

dlang14 11-20-2008 01:21 PM

Sparks,

While I have not put them in yet, I bought these mufflers for my SPF

http://www.classicchambered.com/clas...cts.html#cobra

I got the 3" core with packing, and just matched the factory muffler length. As much as I like the firefly pipes I couldn't justify the price.

This what I use for that problem.

greg schroeder 11-20-2008 02:56 PM

As my Superformance was delivered from the dealer it was down about 28% HP from engine to wheels.

After I changed the headers, side pipes, carb, air cleaner, fuel line and fuel filter it was down about 15% HP from engine to wheels.

I think this is typical

CHRIS DAMSCH 11-20-2008 04:48 PM

I replaced my stock spf mufflers with a 3.5" core racing muffler. I haven't been back to the dyno yet to see if there was an improvement.

I can tell you that if you just want to swap out the mufflers, you can buy them for about $60 a piece.

Not to dampen your spirits, but finding a spare set of "custom" pipes for any SPF is going to entail a long wait. The only ones I ever see for sale are stockers that someone else is unloading because they upgraded to Buckshot or something else. If you can't afford the really nice custom pipes, then find a local reputable welder/fabricator (guys that weld race car chassis know their stuff) and they can cut out the old mufflers and weld in new ones. Expect to pay $350-400 for the labor, as they have to build a temporary jig to ensure the orientation stays the same. Add the cost of the mufflers and another $300-350 for ceramic coating and the whole process will set you back an easy grand. And that's the low buck approach if you don't have welding skills and still want to keep the pipes pretty. :3DSMILE:

Please don't ask me how I know this.

I know with my Roush 427 I can shred the tires halfway through thrid. What is wrong with the factory ones.

I sold my side pipes on the car. They were 4,000 plus shipping.

You should get a set of Mickey Thompson ET street drag radials. You'll hook up good. 275/60 15s, 20 psi. Best mod I bought for the car, hands down.

I was hoping you didn't, LOL!!! You definetly hit the sweet spot with your Roush. $4K plus shipping, maybe when the market was 12K but not anymore.

Invest in a better set of tires and this won't happen.
