351W Water Pump Leakage

I noticed this last year when hibernating the Cobra for the winter and it is doing it again so I thought I would ask you folks in the know what is going on!

After the engine has not been run for a few days (10) there is a VERY slow leak from the hole in the bottom of the water pump! I drove the Cobra this past Saturday and so far no leak but it will start again in a few days. It makes a spot on the floor about 4" in diameter and pretty much stays that size.

Is this to be expected or is it time to change the WP?? The pump has a bit over 16K miles on it!!

Sounds like time to change the water pump Terry. Any water coming from the weep hole in the bottom of the water pump usually indicates the impeller packing is going bad. The way these cars are driven and then parked for the winter, it isn't too surprising the packing will go gunnysack fairly quickly. I think they dry out from being parked, then don't completely come back to original condition when driven so a couple seasons and they are toast.

Look at it this way, at least you can change it on your time frame instead of being stranded in the middle of nowhere...

The mechanical seal for the shaft is begining to fail.

That is what I was thinking!! Better to do it while its cold and not driving than on the side of the road somewhere when its hot!!
