Best way to package sidepipes for shipping?

I have to ship my sidepipes for replacement of mufflers and ceramic coating. I was going to build two wood crates out of 1"x10" pine with luan sides, but the cost and weight is pretty high. Has anyone thought of a better way to do this? I'll do it if I need to but I can't believe that with all these sidepipes being shipped all over the country that everyone is building custom wooden crates. Ideas, anyone? Also, what is the max size and weight for FedEx to accept? Anyone know?

I had my pipes (FIA) sent out for ceramic and hot coated on top. They were packaged in a cardboard box with a lot of crushed paper all around. There were no issues, and the pipes came back the same way. They went UPS

Cardboard box, bubble wrap and ship em via Greyhound.

OK, dumb question #2 - where'd you get the boxes? I wouldn't begin to know where to find a suitable box.

I took my pipes to a UPS Store and had them package them for shipping. It's been 4 years or so ago and I don't remember the cost, but I do recall being satisfied and they arrived in perfect condition. Don't make this too difficult on yourself. Take it to the professionals and let them do it.

I agree with Jim. Take the pipes to your nearest UPS store and ask them for an estimate and how they would package for shipping. That will give you an answer vs. your own homemade packaging and shipping costs. As far as safety goes I have often shipped antique flintlock long rifles (high $) without any problems to date. Good luck!

I would also pack some styrofoam around the tips and collectors. I have had newly coated pipes come back (via UPS) that had the tips bent in.

Jim also sent out a set of stainless pipes for me that I had sold the same way. There were no issues with these either.

I wrapped mine in bubble wrap and cut down a large cardboard box to size. I think Staples will box anything for $5.00 if they ship it.
By the way, you can paint them black for around $10 and it lasts at least 1 driving season.
