OK, New Paint Q: Adding Stripes...
Thanks for all the great info on my previous question! Heres one that just occured to me:
I think the color of this car would be alot more tolerable if I could add some stripes. So would it be possible to add some flat black racing stripes on top of the standard clear-coat? Does this require as much work as a re-paint or can they just be added? I prefer a quality job that will last and look sharp. Your responses are appreciated! :) |
Been quoted around $2,000 to do it "right". Though adding them after the fact you are sure to have some edges on them.

A question? Flat black? Every finger print shows, let alone "wax"! One swipe of wax and it is there perminent. OK, you clear them, there goes the flat black. To do the stripes after and have it look like they were there all along, assuming you have a basic color coat/clear coat base, the painter should wet sand the entire car, add the stripes then re-clear coat the entire car. Done right only a very small edge if any is left behind. Decisions - Decisions! DV |
Ed is right. Since you are going from noise to tail you would be better off to do as he said and forget the flat black.

Wet Sand is the Only Way to Go...
LS, go with the black stripes. Have them wet sand it, apply the stripes, and clear coat it. If you have somebody the caliber of say, Connecticut Custom Car, you will not be able to feel an edge at all. Again, nothin' beats black stripes.:)

What color is the car? You may be able to do other things to make it more of your likeing such as adding bumpers or quick jacks, getting the roll bar chromed or adding static cling rookie stripes, stickers or meatballs. Look for pictures of other cobras that color and see what has been added.
Flat black stripes are not going to be any cheaper then gloss black. You could have them done in gloss single stage paint and lightly wet sanded and polished. You would still feel the edge but who cares. I am pretty sure back in the day thats how they were done, I dont think the stripes were burryed in the clear so yours would be period correct. Still alot of work. |
