B303 VS X303 Camshaft
Anybody have experience with these cams. I have a 302 HO (1987) hydraulic roller with aluminum heads, dual plane intake and a 650 Holley carb, the rest of the motor is stock. I’m looking to upgrade my cam for either the ford B303 cam witch I just slap it in or the X303 and need to notch my pistons. I would like to know the HP gain from one to the other and also by notching piston I will bring my compression ration down and what effect will that do to my HP. Thanks for your feedback.

I've run both. Not great cams for performance, though they do have a nice sounding idle. The X cam is essentially a B with a little more lift. I put in a Comp Cams "Thumpr" ( 227/241 duration. 531/515 lift )hydraulic roller and it feels like I picked up 30 horses over either of the Ford cams, not to mention the nasty idle. :) I've read that our SBF engines favor a split duration cam, and I'm a believer. Here's a video clip of the B303:

Thanks for the info, I like the sound of that comp cam.

Perfect timing
Thanks for posting this question. I am having Keith Craft assemble my roller 331 SBF and all the parts are due at the Plano TX location within a week. Dallas Mustang had a X303 on the shelf, so that's what I went with. I have a Thumper grind in my '50 street rod Chevy pickup (also SBF) and it revs freely without thought. I am going to call CompCams Monday morn and get one coming my way. In my opinion, the grinds are nearly identical. THANK YOU for posting the duration/lift numbers in your reply. Makes things go faster on the phone.

What kind of pistons are you running, I called compcam today and they told me that I need to change my pistons to run a thumpr cam for clearance. Notching my original ones will not give me enough clearance, they told me to use a compcam P/N 35-351-8. thanks Mike

I'm running TRW flat top pistons. They have pretty generous valve reliefs. Lots of clearance with .531 lift and 2.02 intakes.
