Sidepipe ceramic coating costs?

I was quoted locally $400 to blast and ceramic coat both new sidepipes up to the 4 primary tube square flange below the headers. Am I out of touch or does this seem high? The alternative is boxing and shipping back and forth and the potential for damage. I'm thinking $125 to $150 in round trip shipping costs. What does the group say??

so.... I guess $400 for the set ain't bad?? They (Precision Coatings) do good work and are less than 5 minutes from my house. I really don't want to deal with shipping if I don't have to.

thats a good price, consider the surface area they have to coat, i think i paid around 500 3 years ago. the shipping to send elsewhere will be high, not to mention the anguish of wondering if they'll get damaged in shipping.

fred
note i would consider coating the complete header, it will greatly reduce underhood temps

Ask them what their cash price is. I'm fortunate to have a very good ceramic coater local to me, otherwise I may not have dove into these side pipe projects myself.

I was just quoted $350 for the sidepipes in the Houston area.

If the quality is very good the fact that they are close is a HUGE benefit. I drove mine to and from the vendor over 70 miles. I'm on the left coast, 4 years ago when my headers and sidepipes were initially coated (freshly made) they were $495 including the primary tubes with slip connections. Sounds like you are in the ballpark.

onefastmustang 01-20-2009 11:43 AM

I guess I got a bargain for headers and side pipes at $150 out the door.

My thoughts exactly. The headers are already coated and the coating's in good shape.

I think the reason sidepipes cost a fare amount to coat is the lenghth. Most small operators don't have a box large enough to polish the whole thing at once like headers or smaller parts. That means they have to do the middle by hand. Mine cost $375 so I think your in the ballpark.

car4jim 01-20-2009 12:47 PM

$490 in the LA area. Headers and sidepipes.

mickmate 01-20-2009 04:17 PM

My local guy charges $275 for sidepipes. He does a nice job. As pointed out the length of sidepipes is what makes it difficult to tumble and polish without chipping the ceramic.

Dave;
If you go with P.C. let us know how it turns out. My pipes got pretty banged up (I won't go into the ugly details) and I was looking for a local source to strip off the old coating and recoat.

I just sent one header to jet-hot in NC. $142.00 plus shiping ( aprox. $60.00both ways. $ 400 for the sides sounds reasonable.

performancekote

I used www.performancekote.net . It was $325.00 in their chrome color.

I paid $500 bucks in So Cal for headers and side pipes. I learned that there are differences in the processing depending on the color you choose. I had my Kirkham headers and side pipes done in flat black. My finisher told me black is an air dry finish. The Aluminum color is more difficult….baked and then polished. I thought $500 was kind of a rip-off to for the labor to sand blast and spray on the black finish, plus cost of product. Maybe not such a bad price for the Aluminum color. I assumed the high cost was energy cost to bake in an oven, etc. With this knowledge, maybe you can negotiate to a better price depending on the color.

Dave,as part of the cost review ,might also want to compare the material and application methods used when referencing a ceramic coating. Swain is just one of many with claims on the superior quality of their coating. Not implying their coating is the best or better than others, but provides a base for comparison.

A potential negative depending upon personal desires, Swain's coating is a white finish with the surface being similar to medium/rough sandpaper, which they refer to as the ceramic particles. I sprayed mine black with a high temp paint.

From Swain's web site:

Like all of Swain Tech’s coatings, White Lightning™ is a performance improving coating. What makes White Lightning™ the best performance exhaust coating?

1) White Lightning™ really is ceramic so the material is a superior insulating material.

2) White Lightning is applied much thicker than any of the cosmetic coatings. White Lightning™ is applied about .015” thick compared to about .002” thick for the cosmetic coatings. Because White Lightning™ is the best insulating material and it is applied thicker than any other coating, White Lightning™ offers performance improvements that cannot be matched.

Many companies apply the shiny or colored paint based coatings and call them ceramic. Those thin shiny coatings are very different than Swain Tech’s White Lightning™
